Houses for Irular Families

Houses for Irular Families Looking for FUNDS to construct houses for 7 more families of Irrular Tribe of Thirukulkundram (Town Panchayat), Kancheepuram District.

We are a group of four (Sam Jebadurai, Shilpa George, Anupriya, Santosh) Social Work trainee from Department of Social Work (Community Development), Madras Christian College (MCC). We are at point placed in a community called Annai Sathya Nagar that was identified during the flood relief work done by the department. There are totally 97 families in the village belonging to Schedule Tribe (Irrular

Tribe) and out of these families, 8 families were were rehabilitated from bonded labour about six months ago with help from one of the INGO. They have been provided with 1.5 cent land each with help from government but no houses so far. We as social work students giving importance to Report Writing, Case Work, Case Study, Community Organization Programs have this time also acknowledge to put these skills into action by taking up few agendas such as:
1. Construction of 8 houses (for 8 families)
2. Sanitary Health Camp
3. Economic Empowerment trainings
4. Importance to Anganwadi, Education
5. Teaching them monetary skills (maths)
6. Joining them with Self Help Groups SHG

Construction being our primitive and most important agenda of this field work training. We are at point tapping resources either in funds or materials for the construction of the house. So far we have approached government officials from local area counselor to Revenue Inspector for help and they have been very helpful in one or the other way. Depending solely on government and the time period they take to sanction materials and fund for the construction would take another 6 months to 1 year for the completion of the project while they have already waited for about 7 months and the addition of another year to that would leave these tribals without basic facility of shelter which is unjust to any human. So we have taken initiative of raising funds and acquiring materials for these eight families to provide them shelter before we complete our field work in the community by end of March 2016.

!!!!!Please help us to help the community!!!!!

I would personally and publicly like to thank all the donors for their gestures to have understood the real need of the poor, marginalized and tribal community.

Finally my team mates and especially Ms. Anupriya for coordinating the job even while all other team mates including me was cought up with our personal jobs.

Special special thank you to Maa and Paa (Nikki's Parents) and my Baby-Aarnicia-Arpit-Nikki-S (BAANS)/Praveen Family for their continuous emotional support, suggestions and financially supporting my Transportation and fees and fun during the work.

Also special thanks to Ms. Lasiya for covering the whole news in Deccan Chronicle, reporters from News 7 channel, and times of India for their media support.

Government also played vital role in supporting us with materials when we were sort of funds and needed the job to be done immediately so can't end up without thanking Deputy BDO, of Thirukulkundram, Counsellor, RDO of Chengalpet, VAO and Mr Parsuraman from Town Panchayat office.

I am done with this housing project but still am actively available on Saturdays and Sundays in this community. I was able to resource solar lights toothbrush, soaps, paste, plates, towels, spoons, stoves through ActionAid and Tata and now working towards installing RO water plant to provide pure drinking water for the whole village of 100 families through ActionAid and Tata.

There are also students from MCC working towards constructing bathrooms and roadways in the village and looking for funds I believe, please support them.
