The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explained who the “muflis” (bankrupt person) of his Ummah is in a famous hadith:
“Do you know who the bankrupt one is?”
The Companions said, “The bankrupt among us is the one who has no dirham and no possessions.”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The bankrupt person from my Ummah is the one who will come on the Day of Resurrection with prayers, fasting and zakat, but he will also have insulted this person, falsely accused that person, consumed the wealth of another, shed the blood of another, and struck another. So his good deeds will be given to those whom he wronged. If his good deeds run out before the wrongs are settled, their sins will be placed upon him, and then he will be thrown into the Fire.”
