The annual Sh*tro Drubchoe (Practice of the 100 Peaceful and Wrathful Deities), held to mark the beginning of the lunar new year, began on February 25 and will conclude on March 3, the Full Moon Day of the Miracle Month (Chotrul Duchen).
Speaking about the Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities Puja, Ayang Rinpoche explained:
“The hundred deities represent the qualities and activities of the Five Buddhas and their female counterparts. They arise from the pure nature of our own minds and exist within us as the five faculties, five elements, and twelve sources of perception. Through the practice of the hundred deities or even simply by hearing their mantra or seeing their mandala, one can come to realize, either instantly or gradually, that the nature of the mind is inseparable from the perfect wisdom of these deities.
During the Jang Chog (Liberation Ritual), the hundred deities are invoked, and various offerings are made to them. The merit from these offerings is dedicated to freeing the consciousness of the deceased from the Bardo (intermediate state) and purifying the karmic obscurations of the living. This prayer also serves as a guide for those in the Bardo (intermediate state ), showing them the path to liberation.
At the conclusion of the Drubchoe, the names of the deceased are ritually burned. The fire symbolizes the wisdom of the hundred deities, while the burning of names represents the cutting of attachment to the ‘self,’ the root of all suffering. Through these prayers and rituals, the consciousness of the deceased merges with and becomes inseparable from the wisdom of the hundred deities, thereby attaining liberation.”
Ayang Rinpoche emphasized that this Ceremony to Liberate the Dead is a powerful time to dedicate prayers for departed loved ones. Anyone wishing to offer prayers or make dedications for family members, friends, or pets who have passed away may send offerings and the names of the deceased by Tuesday, March 3, by 12 noon Pacific Time, to be included in the prayer list for the Liberation Ceremony. Due to requests from participants, the name submission deadline has been extended.
Rinpoche often reminded us of Milarepa’s teaching that those who sponsor Dharma activities share in the same merit as those performing them. If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to the Sh*tro Puja and Neydren Ceremony, donations may be made via PayPal, bank transfer or credit card to the Amitabha Foundation in your respective country. Please contact the local Amitabha Foundation center for details.
Any offering, no matter the amount, is deeply appreciated, it becomes like a drop of water merging into an ocean of merit. You may also include a dedication in the name of a loved one or pet with your offering.
