When Imām Ḥusayn (عليه السلام) was martyred, grief was not confined to the earth—it reached the seas and the heavens.
According to Kāmil al-Ziyārāt, an angel descended upon the oceans and proclaimed:
“O inhabitants of the seas! Attire yourselves in garments of grief, for the son of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) will be slaughtered.”
The angel then carried the sacred dust of Imām Ḥusayn (عليه السلام) to the heavens, where every angel smelled it, was moved to grief, and invoked Allah’s curse upon his killers, their supporters, and their followers.
This narration reminds us that the tragedy of Karbalāʾ was not merely a historical event—it shook the entire creation. The mourning for Imām Ḥusayn (عليه السلام) transcends time, place, and even the heavens.
