Dear Benefactor,
There are several well known and famous Shiva Temple in undivided Dakshina Kannada District. One of them is Dendadka Shri Mahalingeshvara Temple, located in Puthooru in Karnire Kavathar Village, Archaeological researchers have confirmed that the Shrine belongs to Alupha\Dynasty and is rare with GAJA PRISHTA Architecture. After a lapse of long period from its installation, perhaps
due to diminishing support from devotees, the whole temple was ruined and was and was to be relocated. Dendadka family who stayed close to temple, during early 20th century, faced many disastrous events and to get over ill effects, then head of the family Sri Poovani Shetty arranged to recreate GARBHA GUDI, install Bimba in it, along with NIthya Pooja from then on. In the year 1932 Sri Poovani Shetty, with the co-operation of devotees built full measure temple, organized various rituals like, PANCHA PARVA, NANDA DEEPA, annual festival etc. Annual festival was timed during Maha Shiva Rathri which fallowed which is fallowed till today, it is a known fact that in the absence of a proper road, approach to the temple location was difficult in those days. Devotees carried construction material on head and skilled labour walked several miles to reach destination every day to complete construction work. Many years have passed since then temple building is weather beaten and is in dilapidated situation. Devotees of Lord Mahalingeshvara in and around the Temple strongly fell that rebuilding the temple is dire need of the day. Devotees of Lord Shiva in and around the said temple along with the founder family, have decided to rebuild the temple at the earliest. As a prelude, “Ashta Mangala Prashna” was conducted to seek the permission and blessing of Lord Shiva. On the basis of affirmative response from “Ashta Mangala Prashna” a local organizing committee was formed under the name “Dendadka Shri Mahaligeshara Devastana Jeeernodhara Samithi”.
