Shri Somnath is the first among the dwadas aadi jyotirlingas.Som or Chandra Dev worshipped Lord Shiva at this sacred place of 'Prabhas Patan' on the southern coastline of Saurashtra Gujrat.
This is the Prabhas Tirth got mentioned in the Prabhas Khand of the 'Skanda Purana'.The ocean in Somnath is termed as
Ratnakar.. Jewell bowl in Mythology.
Prabhas was a historical place for 'Pashupat Cult'.The Reverend Preceptors of this cult like Somasharma,Lakulish,Bhava Brihaspati made a supreme contribution in the spiritual aspect of Shiva shadhana.They were incarnations of Lord Shiva.Twenty Eight Preceptors were there each with four disciples.
From vedic ages Rishi Vaishampayan & his grandson Yagnavalkya, great sage Shakalya (who started Shakalya Shakha of Rig Vedas) Maharshi Kanad,the pioneer of Nuclear Physics compiled 'Vaisheshik Darshan' inhabited Prabhas Patan'.
Munis like Markandaye,Bharadwaj,Marichi
Gobhil,Angiras the great Shiv Yogis of Somvidya stayed in this pabitra tapabhumi to practice yoga-tantra & mantra- shashtras.
The Legendary Rishi Parashuram practiced immense penance in this Land.
Aadiguru Shankaracharya formed The Sarada Math...& did the puja of Shri Kameshwar Mahadev.Later on Vallabhacharya Maharajshri took on the legacy.
