The Book of Life
J Krishnamurti

'The self is a very complex process that can be uncovered only in relationship, in our daily activities, in the way we talk, the way we judge, calculate, the way we condemn others and ourselves.

All that reveals the conditioned state of our own thinking, and is it not important to be aware of this whole process? It is only through awareness of what is true from moment to moment that there is discovery of the timeless, the eternal.

Without self-knowledge, the eternal cannot be. When we do not know ourselves, the eternal becomes a mere word, a symbol, a speculation, a dogma, a belief, an illusion to which the mind can escape.

But if one begins to understand the β€œme” in all its various activities from day to day, then in that very understanding, without any effort, the nameless, the timeless comes into being.

But the timeless is not a reward for self-knowledge. That which is eternal cannot be sought after; the mind cannot acquire it.

It comes into being when the mind is quiet, and the mind can be quiet only when it is simple, when it is no longer storing up, condemning, judging, weighing.

It is only the simple mind that can understand the real, not the mind that is full of words, knowledge, information. The mind that analyzes, calculates, is not a simple mind.'

WAR IS A RESULT OF WHAT WE ARE IN OUR DAILY LIVING

This is probably an appropriate time to reflect. J Krishnamurti was asked about the issue of war and all the sufferings of people. He had this to say.

"We often mistakenly think that the world's chaos and misery arise from a single cause. Life is a complex process and we must have a deep understanding to grasp its vastness.

War is the result of our daily life, of our acquisitiveness, of our general attitude towards our fellow men in so-called peacetime. In our daily life, we are competitive, aggressive, nationalistic, vengeful, self-seeking. That inevitably culminates in war.

Intellectually and emotionally, we are influenced and limited by the past which produces the present reaction of hate, antagonism, and conflict.

We are incapable of clear discernment and so we are confused. Our faculty to think has become dulled by previous influences and limitations. Until thought is freed from them, struggle and war, pain and sorrow will continue.

Until our own lives are no longer aggressive and greedy; until (psychologically) we cease seeking security; until we cease to break up the world into classes, races, nationalities, religions etc, there cannot be peace.

Though, superficially, there might be a cessation of this carnage, yet until we direct our minds and hearts earnestly and strenuously to understand and so free ourselves from those psychological causes, continuity of struggle and misery must ever be.

Peace is from within, not from without. This understanding of peace requires deep thought and earnestness.

Thought moves from present to future and back again like a restless animal tied to a post. It moves within its own radius, narrow or wide, but is never free of its own shadow.

Education and the Significance of Life

We think that we shall be able to live happily, creatively, if we learn a method, a technique, a style; but creative happiness comes only when there is inward richness, it can never be attained through any system.

Self-improvement, which is another way of assuring the security of the "me" and the "mine," is not creative, nor is it love of beauty. Creativeness comes into being when there is constant awareness of the ways of the mind and of the hindrances it has built for itself.

The freedom to create comes with self-knowledge; but self-knowledge is not a gift. One can be creative without having any particular talent. Creativeness is a state of being in which the conflicts and sorrows of the self are absent, a state in which the mind is not caught up in the demands and pursuits of desire.

Some of us friends from Kolkata Centre had visited the KFI Uttarkashi Retreat Centre some time ago and had the most amazing retreat. Unforgettable. That Retreat had silence, stillness, love 'written all over' it. So much beauty.

One morning over tea at 6 a.m. and in the midst of all those beautiful trees, we listened to the audio of J Krishnamurti's 1965 talk at Madras 'What is a religious mind?'. Absolutely beautiful. Am sharing a link to the transcript of the talk.

It is essential to have a still, quiet mind to understand. The more you are interested, the more your intention, the more simple, clear, free the mind is. Verbalization ceases. J krishnamurti

Go and sit quietly under the same tree every day, and you will soon begin to be aware that everything around you is living. But to see all this and to feel the joy of it, you must have real quietness inside you.

This is from a J Krishnamurti talk in 1966....nearly six decades ago! As relevant as ever.

J Krishnamurti
1966

"For those who are living far away from the frontier, war has little meaning. But to everyone, as a human being, war is a problem, whether it is fought in Pakistan or in India. It is a problem of relationship. This country which has talked about nonviolence, which has preached ''ahimsa,'' ''don't kill,'' for millennia, forgets it overnight and is willing to kill because it has an image about the other, and the other has an image about this country.

Unless there is a radical revolution in our relationship, we will not have peace. And peace is absolutely necessary - not the peace of the politician, not the peace between two wars, between two quarrels, somewhere in faraway heaven, but peace here on earth between you and me. Because, unless you have peace, unless there is this extraordinary thing in your heart and in your mind, you cannot possibly blossom in goodness, you cannot flower in beauty, you cannot see the sky, you cannot see the beauty of the earth. If there is conflict in you, you cannot see anything. So peace is peace in relationship, so that human beings can work together, think together, solve problems together.

This peace can only come about when there is in each one of us the understanding of relationship and the complete transformation in that relationship. Ours is the relationship of images, and nothing else; and therefore there is no love between two images. How can i love you and you love me if you have an image about me, if you have ideas about me?

So to establish right relationship is to destroy the image -- that you are a Hindu, Pakistani, Indian, Muslim, Catholic, Jew, communist etc.You have to destroy the machinery that creates the image -- the machinery that is in you and the machinery that is in the other. Otherwise you may destroy one image, and the machinery will create another image. So one has not only to find out the existence of the image -- that is, to be aware of your particular image -- but also to be aware of what it is that creates the image.

It requires tremendous understanding, It requires great attention and exploration, not a conclusion at any time. And life is an immense river that is flowing, moving incessantly. Unless you follow it freely, with delight, with sensitivity, with great joy, you cannot see the full beauty, the volume, the quality of that river. So we must understand this problem."

HOW ARE WE BOUND TO THE PAST?

We are not bound to the past. We are the past. And what a complicated thing the past is! Layer upon layer of undigested menories, both cherished and sorrowful. It pursues us day and night. Occasionally there is a breakthrough, revealing a clear light.

Our Centre had an interesting dialogue interaction on zoom on Saturday 11 April. The topic was unusual. A small group looked at Krishnamurti's statement during a talk in Ojai in 1977. He had said his secret was 'I don't mind what happens '. There were participants from various locations including America, Bangladesh and various places in India.

A simple statement and yet there are so many dimensions. They all featured during the dialogue. Such as being able to see ourselves as we are. Being aware of the conflict in ourselves. Being aware of our fears, anxieties, our irritations. Being able to see things as they are. Do we actually see? And so much more.

The question arises: is it possible to 'never mind what happens' so long as one is identified with or has a vested interest in a whole lot of things to which one is attached. A whole lot of things that make up the 'me', the 'self'. If our field of existence is essentially self-centred and limited to this narrow field of the 'me', can one be free?

Would love to hear from friends.

On Saturday 11 April at 6 p.m India Time, our Centre has planned an online interaction on zoom. The exploration will be about what J Krishnamurti once said at Ojai in 1977 (2nd public talk ). He said: 'I don't mind what happens.' Just five words.

As we explore during our interaction on Saturday 11 April, we will go into the context of that brief statement and its real significance. The talk during which this statement featured was about the source of conflict.

Joining us on Saturday evening as facilitator will be Jackie McInley. Jackie has been interested in Krishnaji's teachings for over 30 years. She now runs an association called Open Door that organises events online and in person with like minded friends worldwide, including facilitating programs.

As always, our dialogue interactions are intended to be open, informal, friendly and yet intense. The duration is usually between 75 to 90 minutes. We hope that it all helps in the process of learning, understanding and self-discovery.

All friends who are interested to join are most welcome. Just drop us an email and we will send you the joining details. Our email:

We look forward to Saturday and to an engaging conversation.

This is so relevant for all of humanity. Our identification as this or that will inevitably lead to conflict. Because identification with a particular religion or race or nationality leads to exclusion, not inclusion; to fragmentation, not unity; to violence, not peace.

The politics of identification ensures that good governance will never happen. Because the view is always partial, not whole. Good governance needs an approach that is holistic, inclusive.
