In 1859 Bishop Berneeddose, administrator of Puthanpally took 9 acre of land on the southern side of Puthenpally, close to the river, for lease. His plan was to set up a native carmalite church, but since the seminary in Varapuzha was not functioning well he changed the seminary in 1866. In 1866 Indian hierarchy and in 1887 the Syrian rite were established. The puthanpally seminary was given the
status of the central seminary. He expected teachers of the seminary to be very high in spirituality and knowledge. Bonifus, Fr.John Joseph etc. were the Rectors of the seminary. In 1908, the Pope entrusted the charge of Varapuzha archdiocese and puthanpally seminary in the hands of carmalites who belonged to Navara province. The next two years of the seminary were blessed greatly by the presence of two great and divine teachers. Seminary functioned in Puthenpally for 66 years. To participate in the first Holy Mass of the newly ordained priests, a lot of priests and their family members assembled here in the seminary. A lot of Apostolate delegates and a lot of other unknown priests recited Holy Mass in the sacred altar of our church. In the year 1932 the seminary was shifted to Mangalapuzha from Puthenpally. But today also we are blessed with a lot of scholarly and serene priests from Mangalapuzha. Later the seminary building also was removed from Puthenpally. Today the church and its altar stand all alone, bearing the sweet past stories in the mind. Puthenpally has all the qualities and qualifications to become a noted pilgrim centre. This sort of a pathetic condition of the church will always prick our conscience till the situation betters. Ref: http://www.smcim.org/church/puthenpally/article/683
