John Mason Peck

Birth: 1789
Death: 1858
Homeland: America
Place of Vision: America

John Mason Peck was a pioneer Baptist missionary to the early Missouri and Illinois frontiers, as he explained “ever since I have thought upon the subject of missions, I have had my eye upon the people west of the Mississippi.”

Peck was a man of limited education. He accepted Christ as a young man and since then depended on Him and lived a life of complete obedience to Him. He went to St. Louis in 1817 where he started the first Baptist church in this frontier and baptized many new believers in the Mississippi river. Later, he moved to Illinois where he served until his death. In his forty years of ministry, Peck had organized churches, Sunday schools, mission societies, and Bible societies that served among the Native Americans, frontier settlers, and African Americans, among various other immigrants in this frontier. He established the Rock Springs Seminary in 1827 to train pastors and missionaries for the mission work.

Peck’s ministry was not free from its challenges. He was not just opposed by the thieves and gamblers among the native settlers, but also by the fellow Baptist ministers. Peck, however, responded in faith. As his confidence in Christ grew, he preached ceaselessly, did not stop the printing of Bibles, and started more churches and Sunday schools. Through much travail, Peck saw the expansion of God’s kingdom in North America, especially in Missouri and Illinois.

Peck’s life and his ministry stands as a testimony for how Lord honors faith. When problems of every sort abounded, including drop in funding and opposition from anti-missionary Baptists, Peck believed that God can accomplish great things. He walked by faith which was honored by God. God provided what was needed exactly at the right time and in the right amount. Peck left an incredible impact on the churches he established through his obedience and life of faith.

🚸 *Beloved, what impact is your faith making on your church?* 🚸

Reginald Heber

Birth: 21-04-1783
Death: 03-04-1826
Native Place: Malpas
Country: England
Place of Vision: Europe and India

Reginald Heber was an English Anglican Bishop whose ministry spanned across continents and races, making him one of the prominent heroes of the Christian faith. Born into a wealthy family, Heber showed the signs of a true Christian even from his childhood. By the age of five, he read the Bible thoroughly and remembered the verses by heart. He went to Oxford for his education and excelled in Latin and English poetry. Following his graduation, he was ordained in the Anglican Church and served the Shropshire parish for 16 years.

Heber was exceptionally gifted in writing hymns in praise and worship of God. He wrote hymns out of his experience, and they depicted the zeal and love he had for God and his service. Some of them include “_Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!_” “_From Greenland’s Icy Mountains_,” “_Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning_,” and “_The Son of God Goes Forth to War_.” He believed that Heaven is a place of eternal singing, and we must be trained on the earth to fit in there one day. His efforts saw a great improvement in the church’s music and singing.

While Heber was actively traveling around Europe encouraging the churches, he was appointed as the Bishop of Calcutta (which included the diocese of British India, Ceylon, and Australia) in 1823. He traveled ceaselessly to fulfill his duties as a Bishop. He served as an able administrator and displayed splendid enthusiasm for gospel propagation. With his boundless energy, he traveled to set up schools and to establish and consecrate the churches. Despite the harsh weather and the travel was taking a toll on his health, he never ceased to visit the churches in need to strengthen them in their faith. During one such visit to the Trichinopoly district, after preaching to a large outdoor congregation, he suffered a stroke and then went to be with his heavenly master.

🚸 *Beloved, are you training yourself to make yourself fit to reside in Heaven?*

🛐 *“Lord, strengthen me to serve You tirelessly wherever You keep me. Amen!”

Samuel Marinus Zwemer, also known as an ‘Apostle to Islam,’ was one of the most noted missionaries of the twentieth century who served in Arabia and Egypt for almost 38 years. He was born to immigrant parents from the Netherlands to America and was brought up in deep religious convictions and moral values. Samuel accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior when he was a young boy. When he realized that God was calling him to the foreign field, he immediately obeyed and dedicated his life to the salvation of lost souls.

After graduating from the New Brunswick Seminary in New Jersey, he served with the Throop Avenue Mission in evangelizing and meeting the needs of the poor. However, he was deeply burdened concerning the evangelization of Muslims. When he saw no organization actively involved in missionary work among Muslims, he and his friend James Cantine founded the ‘American Arabian Mission.’

After his ordination in 1890, Zwemer left for Arabia as a missionary. Along with his wife, Amy Wilkes, Zwemer actively moved across several Arabian countries and preached the gospel. Amidst the severe opposition, he initially did street preaching and tract distribution which yielded good results. Later he went on to organize mission conventions, gospel campaigns, and leadership conferences.

Missionary work does not come without its costs and sacrifices. Zwemer lost his two young daughters to dysentery and his brother Peter to illness. Yet, the Zwemer couple hoped in Christ and remained steadfast in their calling. In the later years of his ministry, Zwemer traveled to several countries globally, speaking to student groups, recruiting missionaries for the ministry among the Muslims. He was also an editor of several Christian periodicals and authored many books. Zwemer finished his spiritual race, leaving behind a tremendous influence on the Christian mission to Islam and advancing the church and the gospel worldwide.

Place of Vision: America

Francis Asbury, the father of American Methodism, was born into a working-class Anglican family. As a child, he was a shy and introspective boy who was often bullied by his classmates. He eventually dropped out of school at the age of 12 to work as a blacksmith’s apprentice. His mother instilled in him a strong sense of fear regarding sinning against God and laid the foundations of his early faith. Ausbury accepted Christ as his personal savior when he was fourteen and surrendered his life to serve the Lord thereafter.

The once shy boy now became an active preacher preaching the Word of God in the Methodist churches. He also served as an itinerant preacher in England, traveling several miles on horseback to preach the Gospel. On being called upon to serve in America by John Wesley, Asbury moved to North America in 1771. Initially, he stayed in Philadelphia and began to preach the Word of God vigorously. He considered it his God-ordained responsibility to tell everyone about salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. He wanted to reach everyone — all men and women of all ages, races, and backgrounds. In over 45 years of service in America, the Methodist churches grew in leaps and bounds.

Asbury method of missionary work followed the example of disciples of Jesus Christ. He had no home, no office, no staff, and no baggage. He only owned few books and a horse that he rode thousands of miles in America. Despite intermittent illness, Asbury preached more than 16,000 sermons. He set the order in churches and appointed circuit riders-preachers who traveled from church to church and ministered unto the people, especially in the rural areas. He also opened Sunday Schools to teach the children the Word of God and other schools to make them learn to read and write.

Asbury continued his arduous missionary travels well into his old age until he was laid to rest in 1816.

Place of Vision: Carthage, Roman Empire

Cyprian or Thascius Caecilianus Cyprianus was born into a wealthy pagan family in Roman Africa. He was one of the brilliant minds of the legal fraternity in Carthage and held an honorable position as a teacher and administrator. However, he misspent his youth and struggled for inner peace. He sought a priest's help, who led him to Christ and eventually the path of salvation. After his baptism, he sold all his property and gave it away to the poor, and took up the life of chastity.

Within two years of his conversion, Cyprian, with immense scriptural knowledge and excellent oratory skills, was ordained a priest and then anointed as the Bishop of Carthage. He became popular in the church and a favorite of the poor, which led to the church and society's spiritual flourishment. He was a strong professor of unity within and among the churches and bishops. He developed a constitutional theory of the church for the correction, edification, and unification of different churches.

When the persecution for Christians during Emperor Decius's reign, Cyprian chose to go into hiding and guide his flock covertly rather than seek the glorious crown of martyrdom. However, persecution again broke out under Emperor Valerian, during which Cyprian was forced to sacrifice to the pagan deities. He refused to do so and firmly professed Christ to be the only savior, which led to his banishment to Curubis. From there, to the best of his ability, he tried to comfort the believers through letters. He urged the church to remain united, hopeful, and long-suffering in the face of persecution.

After denying another chance of sacrificing to the Roman deities, he was ordered to be beheaded. As Cyprian, with the utmost calmness, knelt to pray, the executioner's sword flung his head down.

William Hunter * 🛐

Birth: 1536
Death: 27. 03. 1555
Native Place: Brentwood, England
Place of Vision:

The word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword… and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). It is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness… (2 Timothy 3:16). Such powerful word of God was once 'with the God in the beginning,' and the Bible says the 'Word was God.' Many men of God valiantly defied the odds and authorities that tried to falsify the Biblical truth. One among them was William Hunter.

Born into an orthodox religious family, William Hunter was taught by his mother to revere the Bible. Even from his childhood, he found pleasure in meditating the Word of God. He gradually came to understand the truth of the scriptures and recognized the prevalent false doctrine in the then catholic church. When he rejected the false teachings, he was threatened and thrown out of his job.

During those days, the Bible could be read-only by priests. One day when William went to the chapel, he found a Bible lying on a desk and started reading it. Enraged on seeing a commoner reading the Bible, the priest rebuked him and challenged him to understand the Bible on his own. When William politely answered that it is God's book through which God speaks to his people, it angered the priest even more. An argument on the true and false doctrines ensued between the priest and the nineteen-year-old William. Finally, the priest blamed William for heresy and reported him to the authorities.

On being arrested and questioned, William refused to recant his beliefs. He was imprisoned for nine months and was cruelly tortured, yet he did not waver in his faith. Finally, he was ordered to be burned at stake. He bravely approached the stake, lifted his hands to the heavens and said, "Lord, Lord, Lord, receive my spirit," and yielded up his life for the truth.

🚸 * Beloved, is the Word of God more precious to you than your life? * 🚸

While some missionaries set out to proclaim the Gospel, others toil behind the scenes to support those who evangelize worldwide. Though the calling may be different, they all served their Master with utmost dedication. Luther Rice belonged to the latter category who sounded the trumpet call of missions and awakened the Baptists to their responsibilities to a world of need. When William Carey founded the modern missionary movement, many became advocates of global missions, including Rice.

Inspired by John Newton's testimony, Rice was drawn towards the missionary work at a very young age. He went to Williams College to prepare for the ministry and became an active member of the mission society. Supported by the Congregationalists, Rice, Adoniram Judson, and a few other set sailed to India, where they met Carey. However, they had to abort their mission in India due to insufficient financial backing from the Congregationalist board. Rice decided to return to the United States with a vision to remind the church about the responsibility of sharing in the work of worldwide evangelism

Back in his country, Rice traveled thousands of miles on horseback or a stagecoach to make his plea to Baptist churches to support mission work. He unified the churches interested in missions that resulted in forming the 'General Missionary Convention' for Foreign Missions (also known as the Triennial Convention). The convention not only supports foreign missions but also sends missionaries to domestic and foreign countries. The itinerant missionary also established mission societies, Sunday schools, and Bible societies and emphasized the need for Christian education and ministerial training.

Rice also had his share of distress and opposition during his ministry. Yet his passion for promoting the cause for mission helped open mission doors in many Asian countries, including India. His twenty-three years of fruitful ministry among the Baptists in the US resulted in the transformation of scattered disorganized churches into a proper denomination.

Frances Jane Crosby (or ‘Fanny Crosby’) was a Baptist missionary, lay preacher, and a prolific hymn writer who wrote more than 9000 hymns that are still popular and sung in many churches. Some of her best-known hymns include ‘Blessed Assurance,’ ‘Praise Him, Praise Him,’ ‘To God be the Glory,’ ‘Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior,’ and many more. Can you believe that she wrote all these songs being blind?

Crosby was blind from her infancy and lost her father when she was only six months old. She was raised by her mother Mercy Crosby and grandmother Eunice Crosby, who was largely responsible for her Christian upbringing and helped her memorize long Bible passages. Crosby developed a close relationship with the Lord through her prayers and never felt bitter about her blindness. In fact, she boasted all the more gladly in her inability to see herself and the world and delighted in this weakness for the sake of Christ.

Her devotion to her Master is reflected in her own words, “It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me”. And her love for Him in these words, “When I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Savior.” Her fervent desire to be used by God to touch millions of lives was fulfilled through her songs.

Apart from being a hymnist, Crosby was an active rescue mission worker. She passionately worked for the upliftment of immigrants and poor children. During a cholera outbreak in the city, she refused to leave the city and stayed to serve the sick. If someone who was blind can accomplish so much for her Creator, what about us?

"My thoughts are not your thoughts… For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." (Isaiah 55:8, Jeremiah 29:11). We can see these words being demonstrated in the life of Ada Lee. She raised her children in Godly fear and consecrated them to serve God and whose prayers had always been to see her children drawing the multitudes towards God. Were her prayers answered?

Twenty years old, Ada Hildegarde Jones Lee stepped on the Indian soil and served among the Bengal women for five years. In 1881, she married David Hiram Lee, who was also an American missionary to India. In Calcutta, together, they established schools, trained people to serve God, and became a refuge for the poor children and victims of social evils like child marriages and prostitution.

In 1899, a deep sorrow struck the missionaries. Six of their children, studying in Darjeeling, faced death in a landslide. Their son Wilber, who survived, gave the account of that disaster while on his hospital bed. He said that God gave them immense strength to face death, and they were not afraid because they were sure of entering Heaven. After few days of suffering, Wilber also joined his siblings in Heaven.

Losing her children brought Ada a great spiritual struggle. Satan attacked her faith, saying that God did not answer her prayers. She sought strength and help from God to overcome the tempter. When she was told how their children's testimonies were being preached throughout America and how their exemplary lives were directing the multitudes towards God, she thanked God for His wonderful plans and for answering her prayers in His way!

The missionary couple continued to serve in India till their last breath. The fruit of their sacrificial service is still before our eyes in the form of "The Lee Memorial Mission" in Calcutta.

🚸 * Beloved, despite the sufferings you face, do you believe that God is answering your prayers? * 🚸

John Berchmans was born into a religious family in Diest, Belgium. Even as a child, his greatest desire was to become a priest, which inspired him to live a religious life. As a habit, he used to leave his bed before daybreak to assist the priests in conducting masses and then went to his school. Due to his family’s financial difficulties, he used to work as a servant boy and earned to pay for his school.

However, he found an opportunity to undertake religious studies when the Jesuits opened a college at Malines, Belgium, in 1615. After his studies, he joined the ‘Society of Jesus’ in 1616 against his father’s wishes, who wanted John to work and support his family. When his father told him, he would not give him a penny anymore, John said, “See, father, if the very clothes I have on kept me back, I would strip them off, and follow Christ...”

After his ordination in 1618, he embraced religious life and went to Antwerp and Rome to study philosophy. There he continued to devout most of his time to the ministry in the church. He was willing to do any ordinary or menial work in the church, which others avoided and used to say, “Not so much the doing of great things, as doing well what one is told to do.”

He was affable, kind, humble, and endowed with an outgoing personality that endeared him to others. Being a bright student, he was selected by the Roman College to defend the course of Philosophy in a public disputation. He was also asked to represent the Roman College at another disputation at the Greek College. His preparation for these disputations took a toll on his health. He grew sick day by day and was struck by ‘Roman Fever’, which affected his lungs. He spent his last night in prayer and died at the very young age of 22. His life shows how one can serve God by doing ordinary things with love.

Being convinced by her teachers that only superstitious people believed in the Bible, Isobel Miller disdained her parents' faith and took an interest in worldly affairs. But the Grace of God found her one night as she was about to commit su***de for being forsaken by the man she was betrothed to. That night, Isobel prayed to God and committed her life into God's hands.

After graduating from the British Columbia University, Isobel worked as a teacher. During this time, she developed a desire to join the China Inland Mission to serve as a missionary. Her desire only deepened when she heard J.O. Fraser's plea for workers to come and share the gospel with the Lisu people of China. Convinced by the Holy Spirit, Isobel decided to go to China to help the Lisu people know Christ.

Isobel arrived in China in 1928 and spent her initial years learning the language. After her marriage with John Kuhn, the couple moved to Chengchiang, where God trained Isobel in the school of 'dying to self.' She opened her house to the local Chinese women and shared the gospel with them. The couple also served at Tali and Yongping before arriving in Lisuland in 1934. They opened Bible Schools in the Lisu villages to train the people in the basics of Christianity. Although there were many challenging times, Isobel saw incredible fruit amongst the Lisu people, some of whom became missionaries.

In 1950, when the communists took over China, Isobel and her family had to leave for Thailand. Even at the age of 50, she actively responded to God's call to work among the Lisu people settled in Northern Thailand though it meant learning a new language and a new culture. She always put 'God First' and chose to endure hardships for Christ's sake than resting at ease. Isobel went to be with her Lord on March 20, 1957, after modeling a life of implicit obedience to God.

One of the greatest concerns regarding the children born in a Christian family is that they take salvation to be granted. Many young people believe that their parents' Godliness will save them from hell, and so did Johann Ernst Grundler. Born into a Godly family, Grundler took pride in being called Christian. By choice, he pursued theological studies at Leipzig and Wittenberg. Yet, he did not know what salvation was, until he heard a sermon on true and false humility in Halle. There he gave up his arrogance of heart and became a humble new creation in Christ.

Grundler worked as a teacher for a while and then responded to God's call to minister among the Hindus in India. With a fervent desire to lead the Indians to the love of Christ, Grundler arrived in Tranquebar in 1709 along with few other missionaries. He learned Tamil and became Ziegenbalg's trusted collaborator in the ministry. Together they traveled on foot to the neighboring cities and towns and preached the Gospel. Their humble attitude brought them closer to the people, and in a very short period, they were able to reach the masses and point them to Christ.

Apart from fulfilling his pastoral duties, Grundler also worked hard to reorganize the educational activity in the South. His prior teaching experience helped him in this task. He opened Danish and Portuguese schools for boys and girls separately with the help of other Tranquebar missionaries. He believed that evangelization could be made possible only through education and persuasion rather than through coercion and ignorance. Through these schools, he was able to meet the educational and spiritual needs of the native children.

Grundler glorified the Lord and rejoiced at his calling for such a holy work in all that he did. He was a real asset to Ziegenbalg, who hand-picked him to carry out the mission at Tranquebar after him. He remained faithful in his ministerial calling until he was also called to enter his heavenly master's joy.
