ST. Thomas Orthodox Syrian Church, Ambala When the British moved to Ambala from Karnal following the malaria epidemic of 1841–42, they also established their place of worship near their headquarters.

There were two reasons behind the construction of this church. The main reason was obviously majority of the British officers were Christian believers and the other reason was that they believed that God will protect them from all epidemics and severe difficulties like those they faced in Karnal. The present church is believed to be built in 1847 and thus it remains as one of the oldest church in

Ambala. The church was under the control of British till the time of Independence. During the post-independence phase, many of the Orthodox Church members were serving in the Ambala Cantonment and therefore the Government of India handed over this church to the believers of the Malankara Orthodox Church, the Oldest Christian Community in our country that traces its origin since AD 52 after the arrival of St. Thomas in India. In the beginning, priests used to come from Delhi for conducting the service. But later when the number of members increased, a permanent priest was posted here. Presently, Rev. Fr. Thomas Varghese (Jijo Puthuppally) is the Vicar and Priest in Charge of this Church. Now this church serves as the head Quarters of the Orthodox Churches in Jalandhar, Hisar, Sirsa, Panipat, Sonipat and Jammu. The most fascinating thing about the church is that none of the prayers submitted here are gone unheard. Today, people from all religions visits here with their wishes and prayers. The shrine of St. Mary situated in the outside wall is an asylum for the grieving and the heart broken.
