Today, we mourn the passing of Shri Biren Singh Engti (former MP Loksabha), who departed on 10 March 2026, at the age of 81. Born on 2 March 1945, he devoted his life to public service and the people of Assam. A distinguished parliamentarian, he represented the people in the Lok Sabha for five terms, winning elections in 1977, 1984, 2009, and twice in 2014, and served as the former Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. Through decades of public life, he remained a strong advocate for the hill districts and worked tirelessly to bring the concerns of the people of Karbi Anglong to the national stage. Shri Engti also served the nation as Minister of State in the Government of India during the tenure of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, contributing to key ministries including Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, and Planning and Programme Implementation. Beyond his roles in Parliament and the Union Government, Shri Engti's contribution to the political landscape of Karbi Anglong was profound, shaping the region's political discourse and strengthening democratic participation in the hill districts. For many years, he remained one of the most prominent leaders representing the aspirations and identity of the Karbi people. An educated and thoughtful leader, he held a Master's degree in Political Science and a Law degree from Gauhati University, after completing his undergraduate studies at Nowgong College. His passing is a significant loss to both Karbi Anglong and the wider political life of Assam. His legacy of dedication, service, and leadership will continue to inspire future generations. Heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and all those who mourn his loss. May his soul rest in peace.
