Today's Gospel
St. Luke's Gospel 12:22-34
Angus Buchan elaborates on this passage beautifully through a story quoted in the book "A Harvest of Blessing".
It goes like this:
A robin and a sparrow were sitting on a telephone line watching the busyness of humanity below them. After a while, the robin puzzled, turned to the sparrow and asked, "Why are these people running all over the place? Why are they so busy? What are they so worried about?" The sparrow replied, "It's probably because they don't know the heavenly Father whom you and I trust."
We should learn from the story of the three wishes of Alexander the Great while on his death bed. He explains the reasons for these strange wishes on being asked by his generals. They were:
1. "I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure any body. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let not people take life for granted."
2. "The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell People that not even a fraction of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is a sheer waste of time to chase wealth."
3. "And about my third wish of having my hands dangling out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty handed into this world and empty handed I go out of this world."
Most of us are busy gathering riches of this world that we have lost our faith and trust in our heavenly Father. What do we aim to achieve by gathering these or who are we gathering it for?
Remember, we came empty handed and we leave empty handed. Do good to others and gather riches in heaven where neither the thieves can steal them nor the rust destroy them. Trust the heavenly Father for giving us each day our daily bread.
