This verse comes from the moment when Jacob wrestles through the night with a divine figure near the river Jabbok. This encounter happens at a critical point in Jacob’s life as he prepares to meet his brother Esau, whom he had previously wronged.
“Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel” signifies a transformation of identity. The name Jacob was associated with deception and self-reliance. The new name “Israel” marks a turning point where Jacob’s life is redefined by his encounter with God.
“You have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed” does not mean Jacob overpowered God. Rather, it shows his persistence and dependence. Jacob refuses to let go until he receives a blessing. His prevailing is not through strength, but through clinging to God.
This event reveals that true transformation comes through encounter with God. Jacob enters the struggle as a self-reliant man but leaves marked, humbled, and changed.
Theologically, this verse teaches that God changes identity and direction through personal encounter. Victory in the spiritual life is not about self-strength but about dependence on God.
