Thiruvannamalai Temple

English and Hindi

The history of the Tiruvannamalai temple, also known as the Arunachalesvara or Annamalaiyar Temple, is a fascinating journey through time, showcasing the spiritual and architectural grandeur of Tamil Nadu. This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is nestled at the base of the sacred Arunachala Hill and is significant for its connection to the element of fire, one of the five elements in Hindu philosophy.

The Beginnings and Ancient Times:
Ancient Tamil poets like Nakkirar, Kapilar, and Paranar have mentioned the shrine, indicating its significance from as early as the 1st century BCE. The temple's history is also deeply intertwined with the lives of the Nayanar saints, Sambandar and Appar, who composed poems about it in the 7th century. This suggests that even before the temple became the grand structure it is today, it was an important site of worship.

Royal Patronage and Expansion:
The Chola Dynasty, ruling from 850 to 1280 CE, were among the temple's earliest known patrons, contributing significantly to its structure and spiritual wealth. Inscriptions from this period detail gifts from the Chola kings, emphasizing the temple's importance. The temple saw further expansion under the Vijayanagara Empire, with significant contributions from kings like Krishnadeva Raya. The Rajagopuram, the temple's tallest tower, was started by Krishnadevaraya and completed by Sevappa Nayaka of the Nayakar dynasty, marking a critical phase in the temple's architectural development.

Modern History and Preservation:
The temple has witnessed various rulers, including the Nawab of Carnatic in the 17th century and European colonial powers, before finally coming under British rule in the 19th century. In 2002, the Archaeological Survey of India declared the temple a national heritage monument, though its stewardship has seen changes due to legal actions.

The Temple Today:
The Arunachalesvara Temple, with its sprawling complex, houses numerous shrines and halls, including the remarkable thousand-pillared hall from the Vijayanagar period. The temple's layout, with four massive gateway towers, reflects the architectural grandeur of its time. The eastern tower, or Rajagopuram, stands as a testament to the devotion and architectural brilliance of the eras gone by.

This temple is not just an architectural marvel but a living monument of faith, attracting millions of devotees, especially during the Karthigai Deepam festival. It represents Lord Shiva's element of fire, maintaining a warm environment around its sanctum throughout the year, irrespective of the external weather conditions.

The Tiruvannamalai Temple, through its centuries-long history, stands as a beacon of Hindu spirituality and architectural splendor. Its continuous evolution under various dynasties and rulers showcases the enduring devotion to Lord Shiva and the unbroken chain of spiritual heritage in Tamil Nadu

(formerly known as Dwarasamudra) was the ancient capital of the Hoysalas just 17 km away from . The dynasty ruled over much of South India for close to 200 years and during this time they built spectacular temples; both Hindu as well as Jain. In the 14th century, the armies of Alauddin Khilji and Muhammad Tughlak defeated the Hoysalas and raided their empire. It is recorded that enormous wealth and riches were looted. The city never recovered and fell into neglect. In fact, Halebeedu means “old house/ old ruins“. However, few temples survived this devastation like the ones in Halebeedu and today when you see them, you will be mesmerised by some the most stupendous expressions ever sculpted in stone.

Hoysaleshwara Temple
The Hoysaleswara Temple poised on a star-shaped base on the lawn is an architectural marvel. This twin-shrined temple is perhaps the largest Shiva temple built by the Hoysalas. Its base consists of 8 rows of friezes carved with elephants, lions, horses and floral scrolls. Its walls are adorned with intricately carved Hindu deities, sages, stylised animals, birds and friezes depicting the life of Hoysala kings. Imagery from epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharatha and Bhagavad Gita adorn the outer walls with highly ornate temple doorways. It is believed that no other temple in the country captures the Indian epics as elegantly as Hoysaleswara Temple. The Nandimantapa is positioned right in front of the temple wherein there is a huge Nandi richly decorated with stone ornaments. Behind this is a shrine dedicated to Surya with a 2 m tall image. There are exquisite carvings in the interiors of the temple as well. The most striking item is the highly polished lathe-turned pillars.

The famous Narasimha statue at Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, was built by the Vijayanagara king Sri Krishnadevaraya in 1528 AD. Within a few years of its establishment, in 1565 AD, a combined army of the Bahmani Sultans invaded Hampi and destroyed the picturesque city of Hampi - all its temples, architecture and sculptures. Even the idol of Sundara Narasimha was not spared from this destruction.
The Department of Archeology of India started the reconstruction of the Narasimha idol with the broken parts found around it. But unfortunately in the middle of the reformation process, the court issued a stay on it and in this incident Lakshidevi was never returned to the arms of Narasimhadev. The statue remains incomplete even today. Narasimhadeva's broken leg is tied with a belt
The image on the left is from Robert Sewell's book "A Forgotten Empire - Vijayanagar". Here you can see the Narasimha statue as it was in 1900 AD.

The image on the right shows the current state of Narasimha Murthy. Also shown is a digital reconstruction of the broken part of the statue, including Lakshidevi.
