Visiting Mount Carmel for me was something quite surreal, as 1 Kings 18 would have to be one of my favourite passages in the Old Testament in relation to faith and persistent prayer. I pictured Elijah gathering the children of God to Mount Carmel, then I imagined the contest he had with the prophets of Baal and Asherah to see who’s god was real and the god who turned up by fire - He was God!
I imagined the fire falling for Elijah and licking up the water around the altar. AMAZING! Then I imagined Elijah positioning himself on his knees to pray for the rain to come to end the 3 year drought…
On the day we visited Mount Carmel, I got to witness the fire in a sunset and the clouds ready to burst with rain….. It was a glorious moment! I am praying and believing it will also be a glorious moment for you!
Today the beautiful Mount Carmel (kerem) is peaceful and located on the far tip of the Jezreel Valley near the coast, a limestone mountain range that stretches for 24 miles from the Mediterranean near Haifa into the heart of Israel’s hinterland. It is dotted with springs that provide all sorts of growth (carob trees, oaks, pines, cedars, myrtles, laurels, and tamarinds), and covered in tiny volcanic cave entrances that open up into spacious hideaways, suitable for prophets or criminals on the run (Amos 9:3).
When we visit Mount Carmel you can see the Jezreel Valley, Mount Gilboa, and the hills of Galilee and where the cloud rising out of the sea would have been. INCREDIBLE!
