When everything feels uncertain, sometimes the smallest daily rituals can become what keeps us going.

In this moving conversation on Jewish Insights with Justin Pines, Rabbanit Michelle Farber reflects on October 8, when she learned that a close friend’s son had been killed. She wondered whether she should teach that morning’s Daf Yomi class. Ultimately, she realized that this was exactly what Daf Yomi was for.

Washing hands at the end of a meal, mayim achronim, was instituted because of "Sdom salt" (Chullin 105). Harvested near the Dead Sea, salt was so sharp and volatile that wiping your eyes with dirty hands after eating could cause real harm.

Yet, in the very same tradition, salt represents permanence, covenant, and preservation:
🧂It seasoned every sacrifice brought in the Temple.
🧂It was a vital ingredient in the daily incense blend (Keritot 6a), where carnalite salt prevented volatile spices from exploding during preparation.
🧂It seals the everlasting brit melach (covenant of salt) mentioned in Bamidbar.

Planning a major event in Israel is a masterclass in adaptability.

"Why do I even need to study this?" 🙄 "How is this actually useful to my life?"

Anyone who teaches Talmud in high schools knows this exact moment. A student suddenly speaks up, and with one honest question, she voices what many others are quietly feeling.

This experience crosses classrooms and schools, but for girls, it’s often even more pronounced. When there isn't a traditional "obligation" driving them, connecting to the deeper meaning becomes critical. If they don’t understand why they are doing it, they simply won't engage.

That is exactly why we created "Meirot". ✨

Hadran's "Meirot" program is a space where Gemara teachers from all over Israel meet bi-weekly via Zoom (to fit their busy schedules) to do exactly that:
💡 Discuss how to teach Gemara in a way that is better and more attuned to high school girls.
💡 Crack the code together on how to make these ancient texts accessible.
💡 Understand how to make the learning meaningful, alive, and relevant to their lives.

We are currently wrapping up two incredibly successful and moving years of the program with a wonderful, dedicated cohort of teachers. Together, we acquired tools for optimal teaching, learned to ask deeper questions, and built excellent lesson plans.

I am still taking in what a moving experience it was to attend the Second Women's Halakha Conference (כנס נשות ההלכה השני - 'הליכות עולם לה') yesterday Matan - מתן Jerusalem. Seeing nearly 200 young women from across the country engaged in the study of Gemara and Halakha at such a high level was incredible. Reflecting on the world that I trained and learned in when I was their age, it’s amazing to see just how much things have changed.

It was also wonderful to see the collaboration between leading institutions like Matan, Migdal Oz, Drisha, Midreshet Ein HaNatziv, Beit Hillel, and Midreshet Lindenbaum, @מתן השרון Matan Hasharon all joining forces under one roof to expand the female voice in Halakha. I'm just so glad to have been there and to be a part of this important movement.
