This beautiful wedding photograph captures something truly special, generations of one family coming together to celebrate a new chapter, with the Cathedral at the heart of the occasion.

From grandparents to grandchildren, these are the moments that become treasured family memories, passed down through the years. ❤️

For generations, the Cathedral has been part of life's biggest milestones, baptisms, communions, weddings, and everything in between. It is woven into the stories of so many families across Thurles and beyond.

It was wonderful to see this vibrant new venue filled with music, showcasing the incredible young talent we have in our community.

For almost 150 years, the Cathedral has provided a place where music has inspired, united, and brought people together. It is heartening to see new spaces like Market 54 continuing that tradition, giving the next generation opportunities to perform and shine. ❤️

A familiar sight from Liberty Square 💛

For many years, the P. O’Meara sign was a well-known part of the streetscape in Thurles, standing proudly in Liberty Square and becoming part of everyday life and memories in the town.

Now carefully preserved in the Two Mile Borris Transport Museum, it serves as another wonderful reminder of Thurles businesses, local history, and the character of the town through the years.

This beautifully restored Lister stationary engine is another fascinating exhibit from the Two Mile Borris Transport Museum.

Commonly used throughout the early 20th century for agricultural and farm work, engines like this once played an important role in everyday rural life, powering machinery and supporting communities across Ireland.

Thanks to the incredible restoration work carried out by the museum team, this wonderful piece of local heritage has been preserved for future generations to appreciate and enjoy. 🙌

Who is Croke of Croke Park? 📖

Archbishop Thomas Croke is one of the most significant figures in Irish cultural and sporting history, a man whose influence still resonates today in many ways.

Best known worldwide through the name Croke Park, Ireland’s national stadium and GAA headquarters, his legacy is deeply rooted in Thurles, where he served as Archbishop of Cashel and Emly and is laid to rest in the Cathedral he once consecrated. ⛪

From his early life in County Cork, through his education in Paris and Rome, to his time in New Zealand and eventual return to Ireland, Croke played a major role in shaping both religious and public life in the 19th century. Later in his career, he became a strong supporter of Irish cultural identity, including the promotion of Gaelic games and the Irish language, a legacy still felt today.

In Thurles, his presence remains visible and symbolic, from the Cathedral itself to his statue overlooking Liberty Square, connecting the town’s history, heritage, and identity in a lasting way.

A stunning view of the Cathedral captured on a bright blue-sky day, shared with us by Gerry Molumby, thank you for sending in these beautiful photographs.

Seen from the peaceful setting of the Convent Garden, the Cathedral stands proudly at the heart of Thurles, glowing in the sunshine and looking as striking as ever.

How lucky are we to have such a beautiful landmark at the centre of our town and community. 💛

This Bord na Móna bog train engine and track system dates back to the 1950s, when it was originally used in the bogs as part of peat harvesting operations across the region.

Today, thanks to the incredible efforts of the Two Mile Borris Transport Museum, it has been carefully rescued and restored, a huge undertaking that has brought this important piece of industrial heritage back to life.

It was a real highlight and talking point at the recent Thurles Lions Club Coffee Morning, where so many people had the chance to see it up close and learn more about its story. 🚂

The iconic Sweeney’s Bread Van, now proudly preserved at the Two Mile Borris Transport Museum, was once a well-known part of daily life around Thurles and beyond.

Originally working for a Cork bakery before becoming part of Sweeney’s Bakery in Thurles, the van served the local community for over 20 years and remains a wonderful reminder of a different time in the town’s history. 🚐

Alongside it, we have an archive image of Sweeney’s Bakery from 1987, kindly sourced from Tipperary Studies, offering another glimpse into the businesses and people that helped shape Thurles over the years. 📸

It’s amazing how simple images like these can bring back so many memories. Do you remember Sweeney’s Bakery or the bread van calling around?
