Presentation Sisters Union

Presentation Sisters Union We are the Union of Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Catholic religious Congregation founded by Venerable Nano Nagle.

Venerable Nano Nagle founded the Institute of the Charitable Instruction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, on Christmas Eve, 1775, in Cork, Ireland. This foundation was the fruit of more than twenty years of loving service to the poor of that city where she had founded her first school as a lay woman, in 1754. Today, Venerable Nano is regarded as one of the great pioneers of Catholic education. Her wo

rk laid the foundation for a voluntary school system in Ireland and for the wide range of ministries to which Presentation Sisters around the world remain committed to this day. Her spirit and tradition continue to inspire Presentation Sisters and Friends of Nano everywhere. Presentation Education draws inspiration from and is guided by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the spirit and life of Nano Nagle, the teachings of the Catholic Church and our Constitutions.

Presentation Sisters from across Ireland joined the parish community at the Church of St Nicholas, Killavullen, Co Cork on Sunday 26 April 2026 for special Eucharistic Liturgy in honour of the 250th Anniversary of the Founding of the Presentation Congregation by Venerable Nano Nagle and in honour of Nano’s special devotion to the Eucharist.
The date also marked the death anniversary of Nano (d. 1784). Most Rev Bishop William Crean, Diocese of Cloyne was chief celebrant. The joyful singing by members of the Killavullen parish choir of three new songs composed in honour of the 250th Anniversary enhanced the celebration greatly: ‘Rise O People’ by Jessica Dewhurst (Executive Director, International Presentation Association), ‘Take Your Flame’ by Sr Miriam Martin PBVM; and ‘We Go Forward in Hope’ by Sr Cecilia Molloy PBVM.
The Mass was livestreamed to audiences across six continents, highlighting the extraordinary global reach of Nano’s legacy.
Over 200 people gathered to enjoy the wonderful hospitality and beauty of the place and celebrate this very special occasion at a Reception at the nearby Nano Nagle Birthplace after the Mass. It was a great opportunity to experience first-hand the tremendous spirit of local community in the area, along with the beautiful fusion of spirituality, heritage and commitment to ecology which form ‘the three pillars’ of the mission of this sacred place. Words of congratulations and appreciation were expressed by the Congregational Leadership Team and many more to the Sisters at Ballygriffin, Sr Alba, Sr Lois and Sr Úna; and to all involved in the planning of the Eucharist and the Reception which together made for a most memorable day!

On Saturday 20 December 2025, the official launch of the 250th Anniversary of the Founding of the Presentation Congregation took place in Nano Nagle Place, Cork, Ireland. At the heart of the launch was a specially created ritual ceremony titled 'Take the Flame from her Lantern', inspired by a song composed for the occasion by Sr Miriam Martin PBVM. The ritual reflected Nano Nagle’s enduring symbol – the lantern – representing courage, compassion and steadfast commitment to those most in need. At the ceremony participants were invited to reflect on how Nano’s light continues to be carried forward through education, social justice and care of creation, igniting action and hope across generations and continents.

We are beaming with pride 🤍

We are proud to share that UCC’s Women on Walls portrait initiative has honoured Venerable Nano Nagle, the heart and founding inspiration of Nano Nagle Place, alongside our colleague Dr Naomi Masheti, Coordinator of the Cork Migrant Centre, Nano Nagle Place.

Nano Nagle’s legacy began with a lantern in the darkness — a fearless commitment to education, compassion, and justice that transformed lives in 18th-century Cork. Her light continues to guide our purpose today.

That same spirit is reflected in Dr Naomi Masheti’s leadership, as she brings Nano’s mission into the present through her work with migrant communities, championing dignity, empowerment, and hope for all.

Seeing both women celebrated is deeply meaningful for us. It honours the enduring impact of Nano Nagle and recognises how her values continue to shape and inspire the work happening here every day.

We are so proud — and deeply moved.

🕯 Nano’s legacy honoured
🕯 Her mission carried forward
🕯 The light still burning bright
