The Parish Cemeteries of Kilmacow

The Graveyards we look after are;
- Ballynamorahan
- Dunkitt
- Ullid
- Gaulskill Bishopshall
- Upper Kilmacow
- Lower Kilmacow

We are a group set up by the Late Kathleen Laffan to record all the headstones in the graveyards in Kilmacow, Kilkenny and to look after the upkeep of some of the cemeteries.

We had a great group last week up at Old Dunkitt.

Got loads of strimming done and cut back loads of vegetation inside the railings of a few tombs. It was a very hot day and we brought up a big box of chocolates thinking we would have them after we were done, but the heat was melting them so we had to eat them at the start. Life is hard sometimes.

Then after we were done we were given icecreams which went down very well in the heat. Thanks again Jo.

We will be in Old Dunkitt again tomorrow from 2-4 pm so feel free to join us. The following week, 22nd August, is the Iverk show so we will not be meeting at the graveyards that day.

What an amazing day we had yesterday at Ballynamorahan Graveyard and Kilcronagh house.

25 descendants of one of the graves we look after, Clementina Bartolucci nee Dundas, traveled from around the world to come and honour their family.

They stayed in the Pembroke Hotel in kilkenny and first visited Borrmount House in Enniscorthy and then came to visit the grave in Ballynamorahan.

The grave which has been wonderfully restored by Richie with the kerbstones realigned and the railings reset. Some of the pieces of the headstone and cross were found buried at the foot of the monument and are now restored. (We had received permission from the heritage council to carry out the work and all repairs were overseen by the Heritage officer in Kilkenny, Regina Fitzpatrick who was with us yesterday to welcome the family).

Afterwards we went up to Kilcronagh House where Tommy and Denise Quinlan welcomed the group for afternoon tea on the lawn. Their ancestors Clementina and Vincenzo Bartolucci lived in the house with their 7 children in the 1860s-1870s.

One of the visitors commented that they were sad to think that Clementina was all alone here in Kilmacow and forgotten about but when they saw the work that our group does voluntarily and how we look after her they were nearly in tears. It really brings home to us as a group how important our work is and to see the joy on their faces is so rewarding.

Next Saturday we will take a break for the bank Holiday and we will be back the following week, 8th August, at the graveyard in Dunkitt.

We will be back at Ballynamorahan again tomorrow from 2-4.

We managed to clear around the gates and a few trees last week. We are thinking that all the like trees were planted as they are all equidistant apart and not random. Once the saplings were cut the trunk looks fabulous. The photos below don’t really do it justice.

We had a great week at Ballynamorahan. We have an owl living in the church tower and a bee hive in the church wall. Trying our best to not disturb either.

We managed to get more vegetation cut back and we will be there this coming Saturday from 2-4pm, and the next few Saturdays (at least) to finish up more work. All are welcome to come down and see the work we do and if you fancy helping out, feel free to join us.

We were back at Ballynamorahan during the week and it’s starting to look more green after strimming the tall grass. See you there later from 2-4pm.

Last Saturday a few of us braved the heat at Ballynamorahan.

We uncovered a buried headstone with writing and we also uncovered a few large pieces of slate which could possibly be some type of path? Hopefully we will know more once we strim back more.

We hope to be there tomorrow afternoon from 2-4pm. The weather is looking like there may be some rain. We will know more in the morning and will confirm it here in the morning.

We are hoping to be in Ballynamorahan tomorrow from 2-4. We got a lot done last week.

We managed to get some strimming done on a large section. We also cleared around a few graves.

At one stage we found what we thought was a buried kerbstone around the grave of Rev Patrick Renny but it turned out to be a whole stone cover for the grave.
We then did some clearing around the grave of Major Arthur Fleming.

Will definitely be exploring more tomorrow.

The weather is behaving so we will be in Ballynamorahan tomorrow from 2-4pm. The plan is to strim as much as we can and tidy up everywhere. The recent rain and heat have resulted in great growth.

Had a great day on Saturday at the Lower Streetand the weather was kind to us.

We continued with the ivy and the cut around the base of some trees. We also had a tiny visitor. Not sure exactly what but Google says it’s a bank vole. Can you identify it?

I went to Ballynamorahan beforehand and all the rain and heat that we have had now means it’s due a good strimming.

The plan for this Saturday depends on the weather.

If it’s dry enough to use the strimmer, we will go to Ballynamorahan.

It it’s too wet to use the strimmer, we will go to the lower street.

Lastly Sean from Shanarc Archaelogy will be at the Lower Street again this morning to do a survey so if you see anyone there at 8am, that’s him!
