Yesterday was Week 2 of our series on the life of Abraham - "Walking by Faith". Abraham lived in tents and built altars as he moved around. We were reminded that this world is not our home; we are citizens of a heavenly kingdom. We must live with an eternal perspective that changes our earthly priorities and attachments. And to do that we must build altars – regular and consistent moments of encounter with God.

This past Sunday we started a new series titled "Walking by Faith", based on the life of Abraham. We saw how God called Abraham and calls us to leave our places of comfort and step out in faith to follow Him.

Hebrews 11:8-10 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

Impossibility is not a dead end. It's just where God takes over and shows His incredible strength. God's power works perfectly in our weakness.

Our values shape our beliefs and behaviours.

Romans 12:13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
2 Corinthians 9:7 ...God loves a cheerful giver!

Hospitality means to show warmth, friendliness and generosity to others, especially guests. To be ‘given to’ something means it is a habit. We want hospitality and generosity to be a habit of Oaks Church. Our desire is that Oaks Church would be place where everyone feels welcome; a place where we can build healthy relationships and connections; a place of compassion, a place of generosity, a place that feels like being part of the family - God's family.

Our values shape our beliefs and behaviours.

Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

The power of prayer resides not in the prayer itself, nor in its fervency or tenacity, but in the God to whom we pray. Prayer is powerful only in that it accesses the omnipotence, compassion, and justice of the God who has promised to hear and answer the prayers of his people. Prayer is only as good as God is. Since He is good, so is prayer. Prayer works because He does. Prayer changes things because God changes things. Prayer makes a difference because involving God in a situation makes a difference. We will be a church that is founded on and formed by prayer.

Matthew 9:21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.”

This morning we looked at the story of Jesus' encounter with the woman who had been bleeding for 12 years. In faith, she reached out and touched the hem of Jesus' garment and was immediately made whole.

Gospel means “good news”. The gospel is the good news is that salvation is freely offered to us through faith in Jesus Christ. The Gospel is the power of God that brings salvation to all who believe. In the book of Mark, we read some of the first words of Jesus where he proclaimed, “The time is fulfilled, the Kingdom of God has come near; repent and believe in the gospel!” Jesus proclaimed the gospel of the Kingdom of God – the good news that there is another life, another kingdom available to us that is one of love and light and righteousness. Oaks Church wants to proclaim that gospel by our words, our actions and our lives.

"For Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation..."
- 2 Corinthians 7:10

Yesterday at Oaks Church, we were reminded that we are the dwelling places of the living God. When we sin, we make ourselves uninhabitable for God's presence. That should break our hearts as it breaks God's. It is the kindness of God that brings conviction and Godly sorrow so we can quickly repent and be restored to relationship with Him.

Our values shape our beliefs and behaviours.

2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

The Holy Spirit empowers us to live Godly lives. The fruit of the Holy Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control - grows in those who surrender to Him. We want the fruit and gifts of the Holy Spirit to be evident in Oaks Church and we welcome Him to move in us and through us.

In yesterday's service, we looked together at the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18 and, in particular, the conditions needed for the fire of God's power and glory to fall:
1. Repenting of our idolatry
2. Rebuilding the altar of the Lord
3. Presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice
4. Cleansing by the water of the Word of God
5. Intercession

"Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”
