A Little Piece of Knocknagoshel’s Marian History - We have recently come across this lovely old photograph of the unveiling of our Grotto here in Knocknagoshel, taken during the Marian Year of 1954.
The Marian Year, proclaimed by Pope Pius XII, was a very special year of devotion to Our Blessed Lady, marking the centenary of the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. Across the Catholic world, communities gathered in prayer and renewed their devotion to Mary, the Mother of God.
In this wonderful photograph, Fr. Bob can be seen unveiling the grotto, accompanied by two other priests, with a number of Knocknagoshel parishioners gathered for the occasion.
Can anyone recognise the people in the photograph? There are several familiar faces, and we would love to put names to them and, if possible, hear any memories or stories connected with the day.
The photograph is currently hanging outside the sacristy. We have yet to decide where it should have its permanent home, but before we do, we would love to hear from anyone who can help us identify those pictured or tell us a little more about the unveiling of the grotto.
So, if you are passing, do stop and have a look, and perhaps bring along a parent, grandparent or neighbour who might recognise some of the faces. It would be wonderful to preserve not just the photograph, but the memories and stories that belong to this special piece of Knocknagoshel’s parish history. All help with names, dates, memories and stories would be very gratefully received.

RECENT DEATH – Johnny Doody, Knockbrack, Knocknagoshel. Reposing at Leahys Funeral home this evening Thursday 3rd Sept from 5 to 7pm. Funeral Mass for Johnny will take place at 11am Friday 4th Sept followed by burial afterwards In Knocknane Cemetery. May He Rest In Peace.

A Heartfelt Thank You - A sincere and heartfelt thank you to Fr. Gerard O’Leary for celebrating the two wonderful Masses in our Graveyards recently.
Both evenings were very well attended, and it was lovely to see so many people come together to remember and pray for our loved ones who have gone before us. These annual Masses mean a great deal to so many in our community, and we are very grateful to Fr. Gerard for taking the time to celebrate them with us and for making the occasions so special.
We would also like to extend a big thank you to our Graveyard Committee, who were there on both evenings and did such a great job with the traffic management and all the little things that helped everything run so smoothly.
A special thank you also goes to Noel and Dan from the GAA Committee, who provided the sound for the evenings, with the help of Kieran. Their work, much of it behind the scenes, was greatly appreciated and made such a difference.
As always, we are so grateful to our Sacristans, who had everything prepared, organised and ready to go. Their quiet work and attention to detail are very much appreciated.
The rain did make an appearance, but thankfully it didn’t dampen our spirits or take away from what were two very special evenings. There was a wonderful sense of community and togetherness, and that is what makes these occasions so meaningful. We have discussed looking into getting some form of cover for the Altars in both Graveyards, and we will explore this before next year’s Masses, hopefully making the celebrations a little more comfortable for everyone, whatever the weather brings. With sincere thanks and appreciation to all involved.
