Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity, Christian belief that there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct, co-equal Persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit. This we remember every time we do a Sign of the Cross when blessing ourselves.
Also today we remember the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth which is remembered in The Magnificat prayer.
My soul glorifies the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.
He looks on his servant in her lowliness;
henceforth all ages will call me blessed.
The Almighty works marvels for me.
Holy his name.
His mercy is from age to age,
on those who fear him.
He puts forth his arm in strength
and scatters the proud-hearted.
He casts the mighty from their thrones
and raises the lowly.
He fills the starving with good things,
sends the rich away empty.
He protects Israel, his servant,
remembering his mercy,
the mercy promised to our fathers,
to Abraham and his sons for ever. Amen.
Today’s second reading was written by the Apostle St Paul in 56 A.D. nearly 2,000 years ago. This blessing, said by the priest at the very beginning of Mass after blessing ourselves during the Introductory Rites, acts as a Trinitarian blessing, invoking God's grace, love, and fellowship.
It is one of the 3 options for the initial greeting to the congregation right after the Sign of the Cross. Our Response: "And with your spirit".
