St. Cornelius, elected Pope during the persecution of Emperor Decius, faced the difficult task of guiding a Church suffering from persecution and division. He defended the Church’s teaching that Christians who had fallen away could return through sincere repentance. He convened a council of bishops, which reaffirmed his leadership and rejected the rigorist position of Novatian. Cornelius was later arrested and exiled, where he died in 253.

St. Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, was a close friend and strong supporter of Cornelius. Converted to Christianity as an adult, he became a priest and later bishop, devoting himself to the unity and holiness of the Church. During the persecution under Emperor Valerian, Cyprian was arrested and condemned to death. When he heard his sentence, he responded, “Blessed be God!” and courageously gave his life for Christ in 258.

Together, Saints Cornelius and Cyprian remain witnesses of faithful shepherding, courage, and steadfastness in times of persecution and division.

O God, who gave Saints Cornelius and Cyprian to your people as diligent shepherds and valiant martyrs, grant that through their intercession we may be strengthened in faith and constancy and spend ourselves without reserve for the unity of the Church. Amen.

(Luke 7:31–35)

Jesus said to the people:

‘What description can I find for the men of this generation? What are they like? They are like children shouting to one another while they sit in the market-place:

‘“We played the pipes for you,

and you wouldn’t dance;

we sang dirges,

and you wouldn’t cry.”

‘For John the Baptist comes, not eating bread, not drinking wine, and you say, “He is possessed.” The Son of Man comes, eating and drinking, and you say, “Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.”

Yet Wisdom has been proved right by all her children.’

Gospel Reading

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint John
(John 19:25–27)

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.

Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’

Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’

And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home.
