Remembrance of Archbishop Dr. Thomas Croke

We remember Dr. Thomas Croke, appointed parish priest of Doneraile in 1866 and vicar‑general of Cloyne. Despite ill health he worked energetically: he brought the Christian Brothers to found a boys’ school (which he helped fund), enlarged the Presentation Sisters’ chapel, and personally supported the parish church financially. Chosen by Bishop Keane of Cloyne as adviser at the First Vatican Council, he served in Rome January–May 1870 and left Doneraile in June 1870. He was the first patron of the GAA and Croke Park, the national stadium, is named in his honour. His zeal and charity live on in our parish.

This Bicentenary Year we remember the many clergy who guided our spiritual journey over the course of 200 years (12th September 1827– 12th September 2027). We begin by honouring one of our most distinguished Priests, Canon Patrick Augustine Sheehan — former parish priest of Doneraile (1895–1913), scholar and beloved author — whose faith, wisdom and tireless service helped shape our community.
