Carlow Camino

Carlow Camino For centuries people have walked on pilgramages, to take time out, to reflect on their lives, to think about others. This is a new walk in South Carlow

Alan Price has long wanted to do the Camino in Spain and then thought why not do one near where he lives. This is a new Camino for the Blackstairs, South Carlow area of Ireland. He is setting out a route for 5 days beginning in Bagenalstown to St Mullins and back, visiting ancient sites, churches, small rural lanes under the Blackstairs mountains and along the river Barrow. As this the first time

the routes are still being set but please feel free to join in walking for a day. His friend Cathy Fitzgerald is joining him on this inaugural walk.

'Amid a resurgence of interest, how can pilgrimage connect us with deep meaning, the land and each other?

Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in pilgrimage; journeying on foot. Now that it is open to all – religious or not – how can it help connect us with deep meaning, the land and each other?

Walked from Bagenalstown with a visit to St Andrews, St Mary's...along the Barrow river to Wells, then over to Old Leighlin and St Lazerian's and its holy well and tree. Then to Leighlinbridge and along the tow path back to Bagenalstown: 11 miles and Alan and I still talking :)

Day 1 of the started with blue skies in Bagenalstown; with a visit to two churches and a chance to light candles for family and friends. Good to see you Remie! Trekked over to Wells, a ruined church, beautiful graveyard with the Blackstairs mountains in the distance. We looped back and headed to Old Leighlin and St Lazerians and the holy well next and survived a few sudden showers. The offerings at the holy well were curious; and one would hesitate to drink the water. We then Wrestled with all the keys and locks to get into St Lazerians Cathedral and admired the new extension and organ. Then we managed not to get squished on the very narrow road to Leighlinbridge. Icecreams next then slow walk along the Barrow river towpath beneath the oaks, beech and willows. Sore feet but pleased with our first 11 miles behind us.
