Mao Shan Taoist Conjure Legend: Mao Shan Taoist Grand Master Hu Xiu Hua's Great Battle against the South East Asia Voodoo King
(茅山仙師與南洋降頭王大戰)

Hu Xiuhua, the revered patriarch of modern Southern Chinese folk Maoshan Taoist magic, is a historical figure from the late Ming Dynasty. In the Hakka village of Hu House in Tai Lan, Hong Kong, there is a small ancestral shrine dedicated to Hu Fawang, the founding ancestor of the Guangdong Maoshan sect. Hu Xiuhua, a descendant of the Hu family, is also a direct disciple of Hu Fawang.

There are no dedicated texts that detail Hu Xiuhua’s life, but insights are derived from ancestral texts that summon various deities to accept offerings from followers. These texts crucially outline the succession of ancestral masters who are invoked during rituals. In the Invocation Spell of the Qingzhu Sect, an offshoot of Guangdong Maoshan, the Maoshan Master is first, followed by Hu Fawang, Taoist Zhang Jinbo, and fourthly, Hu Xiuhua.

Master Hu was the blood descendant of Hu Fa Wang Gong (胡法旺公)and was a Master of the Mao Shan Taoist Magic. Generations ago in the late-Ming/early-Qing Dynasty, there were Chinese immigrants that migrated southwards to the Northernmost tip of what is known as modern-day South East Asia. The Chinese people were hard-working people and they prospered due to their works. The S.E.A voodoo sorcerers would harass them by putting hexes and profit off of the Chinese people by curing them "short term" and not permanently. So Master Hu Xiu Hua went down to S.E.A to continue his travels and encounter such obstacles. So he decided to cure all of the voodoo curses (降头 ) that the S.E.A voodoo magicians placed on them. Master Hu offended the South East Asia Voodoo King (降头王) and the Voodoo King challenged Master Hu in a spiritual conjure duel. They each swear an oath to the opposition respectively. The Voodoo King makes an oath that If he was to win, then Master Hu's power will not reach S.E.A. Likewise Master Hu swears an oath that if he was to win, then all of the S.E.A's voodoo sorceries will not extend beyond the boundaries of S.E.A.

Then, the day of the battle commenced and they duel it out by building a wall with their spiritual conjure for 7 days and 7 nights. The S.E.A voodoo king's power was highly cultivated and was in the lead Master Hu was lagging behind just by a brick or two. To gain a victory, Master Hu decided to bring out a magical item, but as soon as he brought it out, the Voodoo King saw it and use his palm to push Master Hu into the river. Suddenly as Master Hu was in the river, a White Crane Immortal rescues Master Hu's life. Therefore, to repay this magnanimous debt, the tradition from there on is a Mao Shan Taoist disciple must never eat crane meat, otherwise, he or she will lose all of their powers. Continuing on, Master Hu uses the "Three Sacred Mountain Finger Mudras" (one of the magick of Maoshan) to attack the Voodoo King and finished his wall. Thus the S.E.A's voodoo sorceries were permanently confined to that region of the area and can't reach the the spiritual realm of China,we can also known that a "spiritual barrier" or "protective barrier".

Hence, Master Hu's name was magnified and so was the power of Mao Shan Taoist Sorcery. After defeating the S.E.A Voodoo King, he went back to Guangdong Province of Mainland China to start a variety of branches of Mao Shan Sorceries to expand the Mao Shan Sect (True Heart Sect, White Lotus Sect, Broken Clothes Sect, etc...).
