古代有一賢臣，偶爾談論國王暴虐，不會治理國事。國王聞言大怒，命左右將他逮捕來，令割下脊骨取百兩肉。後有人證明此人是賢臣，有功於國家。國王心中懊悔，便賜予千兩肉，用為補脊骨。賢臣夜半吟呻叫喚，甚大苦惱。國王聞聲就問：「何以如此？取你百兩，十倍與你，你意猶不足嗎？」左右答：「大王如截下他人頭來，雖然還給一千個頭，仍不免死亡。賢臣雖十倍得肉，不免痛苦。」國王聽後，才有所悟。

古代有一個愚人，家中蓄養一隻母牛，剛生小牛不久。計劃以土產風味的牛乳宴客，欲先儲藏牛乳以待。他心中想：「若天天擠取牛乳，牛乳漸多，至宴客時，將無存放，而天熱又會酢酸敗壞。不如即就牛腹儲藏，等到客來之日，全部擠取比較新鮮。」由是將吃奶的小牛牽開﹐母牛小牛各繫異處。一個月後設會，迎接許多嘉賓來臨，牽出母牛欲擠取牛乳，而此母牛乳囊收縮，乾枯無乳了。眾賓客怒或笑。愚人也怒說：「誰偷走的牛乳！」
我們欲行布施，應及時而作。加等待「富有」之時，再來布施，而財物或為水火所湮沒，或為盜賊所長奪，或生意失敗，或猝然命終，結果無法布施。所以不及時布施，好像儲藏牛乳於牛腹一樣。

古代印度有個婆羅門師，見奢風日盛，欲舉辦宣揚節儉大會，命弟子雇一瓦師製造瓦器待用。弟子在途中，遇一瓦師牽看驢子，負載瓦器求售。一會兒，劣驢盡把瓦器弄破﹐是人啼哭懊惱。弟子見罷，問為何啼哭？答道：「我勤積數年，始得此許多瓦器，這惡驢都把它弄破，怎不傷心！」弟子聽罷，認此驢是佳物，長久所作，頃刻弄破，我今當買此驢。瓦師喜不自勝，即使賣與。弟子乘坐回家，而問故？說道：「此驢勝於瓦師，瓦師長久所作瓦器，少時都能弄破。」而聞後，啼笑皆非。

世間華貴子弟，享用現成的：偏偏作惡造孽，損害社會，忘恩負義，與那劣驢有何分別？

古代有一個年青人，在大池邊，見水底有條金鍊，便跳入水中，捏看泥土求覓。找了半天，疲勞至極，仍不得金。出水而坐，一會兒，水清後又見金鍊，復入水求金，亦得不到。
其父來，問何故疲困如此？兒子說：「水底有金鍊，入水尋覓不得。」父見水底的影子，而知此金鍊是在池邊樹上，而影現水底。其父說：「必是飛鳥銜金鍊掛於樹上。」聽從父言，上樹果然得金。

凡夫每把妄見當作真實，捨本逐末，徒勞無功，好像在永中找金鍊條一樣。法句經說：「不真實認為真實，真實認為不真實，是邪惡思想的境界，不能達到真實。」

古代有一個愚人﹐到親戚家裏做客。主人招待他吃飯﹐他嫌菜餚平淡無味。主人便加些鹽，菜就好吃多。愚人心裡想：「原來美食就是因為有鹽的緣故，鹽的功用真不可思議。一點點鹽，便如此好吃；加多些，味道不是更好嗎？」愚人返家後，煮菜用一大把的鹽，那知鹹得要命，無法下咽，趕緊吐出來，大叫上當不已。

佛法中啟示我們的道埋，如使用食鹽調味一樣﹐妥當應用﹐反成無益而有害。又如外道聞佛教節飲食或過午不食，於道有益；他即便斷食七日或十五日，如此徒增饑餓，並有害於身體。
