*Theme: Orpah Returned To Her Gods (Lesson Three)*

*Text: Ruth 1:8-14*

_8 But along the way, Naomi told her two daughters-in-law, “Each of you go back home. Return to your mother’s house. May the LORD show his gracious love to you, as you have shown me and our loved ones who have died._

_9 May the LORD grant each of you security in your new husbands’ households.” Then she kissed them good-bye, and they cried loudly._

_10 They both replied to her, “No! We’ll go back with you to your people.”_

_11 But Naomi responded, “Go back, my daughters. Why go with me? Are there still sons to be born to me as future husbands for you?_

_12 So go on back, my daughters! Be on your way! I’m too old to remarry. If I were to say that I’m hoping for a husband tonight and then also bore sons this very night,_

_13 would you wait for them until they were grown? Would you refrain from marriage for them? No, my daughters! I’m more deeply grieved than you, because the LORD is working against me!”_

_14 They began to cry loudly again. So Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye, but Ruth remained with her._

*Why Did Orpah Return?*

Yesterday, we considered the fact that Orpah did not have enough love for Naomi and the fact that Orpah was material-like fellow. Today, we will continue with point three.

Follow me.

*3. Orpah Loved The Gods of Moab More Than The Almighty God of Israel*

Orpah grew up with her gods. They were precious to her. That was what she knew from her infancy. She thought to herself, "how can I leave the gods I knew from my infancy and worship the God I don't know?" So she made up her mind.

Beloved, we all have some level of historical backgrounds which we cherish so much. We grew up in communities. We loved what we were taught. We loved what we served. We loved our way of life.

When you are in Christ you are a new person (2 Corinthians 5:17). You are no longer dealing with the past bad life. The gods you used to worship are no longer your gods. You now have only one God, the Almighty God.

We have different forms of gods. Those we worship ignorantly and those we worship with full understanding. Most of us worship the gods ignorantly. Luke 16:13 says no servant can serve two masters. Your master is whom you love and serve.

We serve football games, television and radio shows, relationships, marriages, businesses, money, and the like. Christians today have more time for these mentioned gods than the Almighty God.

Most Christians spend more time on these gods than the Almighty God. A Christian can walk out from the church when service is in progress, simply because his or her favourite programme is due to start. Your love for the programme is more than the love for the Almighty God. And whatever you love than the Almighty God is your god.

Do not return. Do not go back ignorantly. Do not go back to the world. Do not be like Orpah.

*4. She Was Tired of The Journey*

They got to the far end of the journey and Orpah could not continue. Orpah was already tired. She couldn't go on.

Christians today get tired early. The journey seems too tough for many Christians. Paul fought a good fight. Let's also fight a good fight.

*5. Orpah Had Negative Influence From Her Peers*

It is possible that Orpah was influenced by her peers. Her friends never wanted her to leave them. They needed her around.

Negative influences destroy a lot of Christians. Men, women, youth, children are victims. Premarital sex committed by Christians youth are mostly as the result of negative influence. What you don't know will be made known to you by your friends who are experts.

Be wise beloved.
Be vigilant.

*Meditation*

*"They began to cry loudly again. So Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye, but Ruth remained with her." (Ruth 2:14).*

*Prayer*

*To return back to the world would be dangerous, which I am not ready to do Lord, help me therefore, win the race, in Jesus' Name!*
*Amen!*

*Theme: Is There Anything Like Incompatibility In Marriage (Lesson Four)*

*Text: 1 Samuel 25:23-25*

_23 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got down from the donkey and fell on her face before David, prostrating herself on the ground._

_24 She fell at his feet and pleaded, “Your majesty, let the guilt be on me alone, and please let your servant speak to you. Listen to the words of your servant._

_25 Please, your majesty, don’t pay attention to this worthless man Nabal, for he’s just like his name. Nabal is his name and folly is his constant companion. But I, your servant, didn’t see your majesty’s young men whom you sent._

*Abigail Has Lessons To Be Leant*

A great woman, with great wisdom, married to a great fool, became a saviour to her husband. There are some great lessons we need to learn from her, and as Christians we need these lessons.

*Abigail In a Home*

Let's consider Abigail in a home.

1. *Great Understanding*

Her simple understanding makes people like her. She understands the old and young. Check this:

*“…And she was a woman of good understanding and of a beautiful form…” (Verse 3).*

Very wise; She knows how to deal with individuals no matter their differences in character. She judges with fairness using her God-giving gift – wisdom.

Let’s consider the Verse 24:

*“And she fell at his feet and said, On me, my lord, on me let this iniquity be. And please let your handmaid speak in your ears, and hear the words of your handmaid.”*

People call her a good mother. When her child complains of being beaten by a colleague or an adult, she doesn’t make conclusions by condemning the others and given innocence to his child, rather she sits her child down and teaches him the principles in life. What a woman!

*2. Very Loving*

Every child is hers. She loves all children as if they are her own children. She feeds all children who are in her domain. All men are considered as her husbands and she treats them with dignity. No wonder after the death of his husband, Nabal, David took her as his wife.

*“And David heard that Nabal had died, and he said, blessed is the LORD who has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and has kept His servant from evil. For the LORD has returned the wickedness of Nabal on his own head. And David sent and spoke with Abigail, to take her to him for a wife.” (Verse 39).*

*3. Very Joyous*

Always praising God. She will never sing songs without meaning. She also teaches her children God kind of songs instead of worldly songs. When she met David in Verse 26, this is what she said:

*“As the LORD lives and as your soul lives.”*

That was praise to God.

*4. Very Respectful*

She fell down at David’s feet in Verse 24:

*“And Abigail saw David and hurried and dismounted from the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground.”*

This indicates great respect. She respects all persons around her. Her household admire her of this behaviour and respect her as well. Because whatever you want others to do to you, do the same to them.

*5. Very Accommodating/Tolerating*

She accommodates wise people as well as fools. She tolerates all forms of nonsense but still maintains her dignity. Her husband is foolish:

*“And the man's name was Nabal, and his wife's name was Abigail. And she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful form. But the man was cruel and evil in his dealings…” (Verse 3).*

Yet she accommodated him. Due to this good attitude she is able to bring all her family under one umbrella.

*6. Very Caring*

She cares for people and their problems. People problems are her problems. She cares for her household, the reason for her intervention on her husband's behalf (Verse 18-31), after hearing what her husband did to David’s messengers, hear what transpired:

*“…And now know and consider what you will do, for evil is determined against our master and against all his household. For he is a son of worthlessness, so that none can speak to him.” (Verse 14-17).*

Because David wanted to wipe all that belong to Nabal by the light of the day:

*“…So and more also may God do to the enemies of David, if I leave to the light of the morning any that is his of one who urinates against the wall.” (Verse 21-22).*

So this comes to prove a point that Abigail was an intercessor. She interceded for others. Some of us, "I" and "me" are our prayer daily basis.
Change the pronouns.

*7. Very Polite*

She speaks when it is necessary. After seeing David, she did not attack her husband after she got home, she waited when he came to himself:

*“And it happened in the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal and his wife had told him these things, his heart died within him and he became like a stone” (Verse 37).*

Then she approached her with very polite manner. What a woman!

A role model is not someone who puts rags on him/herself as clothes. Or someone who thinks that her underwear is expensive so people should see it.

But a role model is a person who lives a positive life, and have admired life, who serves as an example to people, whose behaviour is emulated by others.

Therefore be a role model to people just like Abigail.

*Meditation*

*"Please, your majesty, don’t pay attention to this worthless man Nabal, for he’s just like his name. Nabal is his name and folly is his constant companion. But I, your servant, didn’t see your majesty’s young men whom you sent." (1 Samuel 25:25).*

*Prayer*

*Help me Holy Spirit, to behave like a Christian, a Christian who hates sin, in Jesus' Name!*
*Amen!*

*Theme: Is There Anything Like Incompatibility In Marriage? (Lesson Two)*

*Text: 1 Samuel 25:2-3*

_[2] Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel, and the man was very rich. He had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. And he was shearing his sheep in Carmel._

_[3] The name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. And she was a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance; but the man was harsh and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb._

*Wisdom Verses Foolishness In a Home*

Nabal talks sh*t to his audience. Abigail calms the situation and makes peace between them.

Nabal roars like a lion on his visitors. But the wise Abigail comes in, uses his intelligence and control the situation.

Nabal will say I will go and teach him a lesson. Abigail says calm down dear we will handle it later.

Nabal says don’t give them the food. Abigail replies, my Lord, please let’s show hospitality for God to bless us the more.

Nabal says let’s beat them. Abigail says let’s spare them.

Nabal drinks and become drunk. Abigail brings him in and observe him till he is fine.

Nabal uses his wealth to show off and don’t respect people. Abigail makes him understand that wealth is from the Lord, so he should take his time.

Nabal receives his visitors with ill mind. Abigail tells him to be careful with his attitude of receiving visitors because he doesn’t know tomorrow, whatever you do to others they will repay you with the same coin.

Nabal will try to detain people’s animals in his animals’ cob. Abigail will say, dear, I don’t think what you are doing is right, allow the animals to go because whatever a man sows is what he reaps.

Nabal tells his children to go and steal their neighbour’s animals. Abigail warns the children not to do it any day. She then sits them down and tells them the principles in life. The dos and don’ts in life.

Nabal says I don’t know forgiveness, I will take vengeance. Abigail says forgive so that God will also forgive you; for vengeance is the Lord, therefore, leave it to God to judge.

These contrasts clearly give a vivid explanation to the two couples who were born in different homes and were taught of different cultures and traditions but because Abigail was controlling the marriage, they could stay in harmony despite the challenges from the foolish Nabal.

Every marriage is workable if the players want it to work. Every behaviour is controllable if you determine to do so.
Thank God we have the Holy Spirit as our help, let Him be in the centre of your life and marriage.

*BIRTHDAY APPRECIATION*

*I sincerely thank you for your prayers, wishes and gifts during my birthday yesterday. God bless you.*

*Meditation*

*"The name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. And she was a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance; but the man was harsh and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb." (1 Samuel 25:3).*

*Prayer*

*Father, I am ready to go with my partner despite the fact that we are incompatible, help us Holy Spirit, to live in peace and harmony, in Jesus' Name!*
*Amen!*

*Theme: Are You Locked In Prison?*

*Text: Genesis 39:19-23*

_19 When Joseph's master heard his wife's claim to the effect that This is how your servant treated me, he flew into a rage,_

_20 arrested Joseph, and locked him up in the same prison where the king's prisoners were confined. So Joseph remained there in prison._

_21 But the LORD was with Joseph. He extended gracious love to him, causing the prison warden to be pleased with Joseph._

_22 So the prison warden entrusted into Joseph's care all the prisoners who were confined in prison. Whatever they did, Joseph was in charge of the work detail._

_23 The prison warden did not have to worry about anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with him. That's why Joseph prospered in everything he did._

*Who Is Locked In Prison?*

Joseph's master came back home from his daily routines and his wife lied to him. Immediately he believed his wife's report. No investigations, no interrogations. Joseph was therefore cast into prison.

Joseph ordeal at this point, escalated. He was sold by his own blood, the people he knew from his childhood. Those who bought him also sold him to a different person. The person was nice to him and even made him an overseer in his house.

At this moment, he thought he had arrived, no more pain, no more sorrows. But no, he was put in prison.

Prison means restriction.
Prison means bondage.
Prison means confinement.

When you are in prison your movement become restricted. You are limited to certain things and certain places. You can't have access to certain things. You lack certain basic needs. Your freedom has been taken away from you.

Many Christians are in prison. They are in spiritual and physical prison. They have limited access to some basic needs. Progress is limited. Pains and sorrows are their companions. But I want you to know that Jesus is the antidote to prison challenges.

I pray that you come out from your prison in Jesus' Mighty Name! When you are living for God, even in the lion den, he will show up. When you walk through the valley of the shadow of death He is still your God. Joseph became deputy Warden in the prison.

Don't allow your prison to end your life. Don't try to kill yourself during your prison moment.
Your prison moment is your learning moment.
It is a training moment.
Don't give up during this moment.

Paul said:

*"Who will separate us from the Messiah's love? Can trouble, distress, persecution, hunger, nakedness, danger, or a violent death do this?" (Romans 8:35).*

Whether prison or not don't leave His presence.

*Meditation*

*"Arrested Joseph, and locked him up in the same prison where the king's prisoners were confined. So Joseph remained there in prison." (Genesis 39:20).*

*Prayer*

*Father, any prison I find myself in, help me to overcome it, in Jesus' Name!*
*Amen!*
