PRAYER OF FAITH (7)

James 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
Vs15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

James explains what the “prayer of faith” is.

Recollect that that there are activities involved in receiving -

Acts 2:1-4;
Acts 2:38;
Acts 2:16-19.

In Acts 2:38, we saw how that the term “gift of the holy ghost or the holy ghost upon” was used to explain utterance.

The same term was used in Acts 8.

Acts 8:16 For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
Vs 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

They had believed the gospel earlier in Verse 12 and 14

Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women...

Vs 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

Hence they had received the promise of the spirit (Galatians 3:14; Ephesians 1:13)

The indwelling of the Spirit is the right and privilege of every one who has believed the gospel. Paul further explains this truth in Romans 8 below.

Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Vs 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Vs 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

This was corroborated in 1st Corinthians 3.

1st Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God,
and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

In other words, there was an action from those who were
recipients of the spirit.

They “received from or took advantage of” what God has placed in them. That receiving was evident from the actions they took.

CONFESSION
I consciously receive in prayer as an act of my will. I choose not to be passive. I choose to active receive in prayer by speaking my expectations.

*PRAYER OF FAITH (6)*

*Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.*

We said last time that the phrase “you shall receive” means to take from or take advantage of”

What was Jesus referring to? Luke lends credence to this in Act 2.

Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
Vs 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
Vs 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
Vs 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The context was well explained. Notice the action “…they began to speak” thus, the receiving action was demonstrated by speaking – utterance.

This implies that there was an activity involved in receiving.

It is clear that Luke in Acts 2:4 was referring to utterance, that is, their action or their receiving was by speaking in tongues.

When Jesus said in Acts 1 that “ye shall receive power… he was referring to believers taking from or taking advantage of the power of God resident in them.

Hence Paul taught believers in Ephesus.
Ephesians 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.

Peter used the word receive again in Acts 2:38.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Earlier, he explained Joel’s prophecy and was emphatic on the fact that “…sons and daughters shall prophesy” (Acts 2:16-18)

The emphasis was on the fact that “they shall prophesy.” So consistently, he was referring to the action of the believer. The term “gift of the Holy Ghost” as used by Luke in the Book of Acts was referring to utterances. (speaking in tongues and prophesying).

*Confession:*
*I actively participate in receiving when I ask in prayer. The power of God is at work in me and towards me. I have utterance. I ask boldly and I receive, Amen*

*PRAYER OF FAITH*

*James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.*
*Vs 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.*
*Vs 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.*
*Vs 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.*

James’s words in the aforementioned texts show that prayer goes beyond making requests unto God. It also involves receiving from God. In other words, receiving is part of prayer.

James was very clear on why the brother who asked will not receive…

…let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.

He explains ‘’wavering” as being double minded in verse 8. The word “wavering” implies to judge; to separate thoroughly between two things or opinions; to dispute.

This means it can either be in the positive or negative. It is often used for deciding between two things. It was used in James 2:4.

James 2:4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

Jude 1:9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

In essence, James explains the term “wavering” as an act of unbelief.

Why will the brother waver?

The focus of the context of James 1:5-7 is the character of God.

Hence the wavering is about the character of God.

Notice how the character of God is described.
• He gives to all men liberally, without finding faults. Thus, James explained God as a giving God, who does not find fault or blame before He gives.
• He does not tempt with evil; - circumstances that drive the believer to pray was not God tempting the man with evil
• He is without variableness or shadow of turning (James 1:17)
• He does not change
• He is our Father

*Confession*
*God is my Father. I am a son, I have access to the Father. My focus is on the character of the Father when I pray. When I ask in prayer, I receive*

*PRAYING FOR MINISTERS OF THE GOSPEL (1)*

*Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;*

Praying always for all saints would definitely include our ministers (Pastors and Leaders in the church).

The Apostles asked that we pray for them. This implies that the minister of the Gospel ought to be prayed for, particularly for the work of the ministry.

Ephesians 6:19
And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,
Vs 20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

Colossians 4:2
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
Vs 3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
Vs 4 That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

We are to pray for utterance and boldness to speak God’s word as they ought to.

Acts 4:29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

In praying for ministers of the Gospel, we ought to also pray that their ministry is received without hindrance and their lives to be preserved.

Romans 15:30 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;
Vs 31 That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints;

2nd Thessalonians 3:1 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:
Vs 2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

*PRAYER:*
*Pray for the Pastors in your local church for boldness and utterance in their ministry.*
