THE SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST.

John the Baptist spent his adult life preparing the way for Jesus and proclaiming that “the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.”. He was born to Zechariah and Elizabeth, elderly married couple. The Angel Gabriel had visited Zechariah and told him that his wife would bear a child, even though she was already past the child-bearing age.

Elizabeth was Mary’s cousin and Zechariah was a Priest of the Temple in Jerusalem. As a baby in the womb, John recognised Jesus’ presence in Mary’s womb when Mary visited Elizabeth soon after the Annunciation. Both women were pregnant at the same time.

John was probably born at Ain-Karim, which is southwest of Jerusalem. As a young adult, he lived as a hermit in the desert of Judea until about A.D. 27. When he was 30, he began to preach on the banks of the Jordan, calling for repentance and baptizing people in the river waters. When Jesus came to John to be baptized, John recognised Jesus as the Messiah and baptized Him, saying: “It is I who need baptism from you.”

John continued to preach after Jesus was baptized, but was imprisoned not long after by Herod Antipas, after he denounced the king’s adulterous marriage with Herodias, wife of his half-brother Philip.

John was beheaded at the request of Salome, daughter of Herodias. Many came to know Jesus through John, namely the Apostles Andrew and John.

We wish our entire membership a successful and spiritual fulfilment during the celebration of the great feast of our Patron, "ST JOHN THE BAPTIST".

St. John the Baptist, pray for us.

In Loving Memory of our dear Worthy Commander Major Noble Brother Franklin Laurenz Agbenosi.

It's hard to believe that a year has passed since you left us. The pain of losing you is still as fresh as it was on that day, yet the memories we shared bring comfort and joy amidst the sorrow.

Major, you were more than just a brother; you were a confidant, a protector, and a best friend. Your laughter was infectious, and your smile could light up even the darkest of days. You had an incredible way of making everyone feel special, and your kindness knew no bounds.

You taught us so much about life and love. Your courage in the face of adversity, your unwavering optimism, and your generous spirit continue to inspire us every single day. You lived your life with a sense of adventure and a heart full of compassion, leaving an indelible mark on everyone you met.

We miss your conversations, your wise advice, and the simple joys of just being together. There is a void in our lives that will never be filled, but we find solace in knowing that you are at peace and watching over us.

Today, we celebrate your life and the incredible person you were. We remember the joy you brought into our lives and the countless ways you made the world a better place. Though you are no longer with us in person, your spirit lives on in our hearts and in the many lives you touched.

Thank you for being the best brother anyone could ask for. We carry your love with us always and cherish the memories we created together. Until we meet again, dear brother, may you rest in eternal peace.

With all our love.

Franklin Agbenosi 🕊️🕊️🕊️

*DAY 6 – NOVENA TO ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST*

John the Baptist
came to bear
fruits that befits
Jesus, the Light
of God’s kingdom (Galatians 5:16-24)

The world is so divided and
broken today. Mass communication and improved technology have brought the peoples in the world closer on one hand, but it also divides. There is so much information, disinformation and misinformation, so much so we can no longer agree on anything.

How, then, can we dream of a
humanity united in truth and in
love? If humanity is divided, we will eventually destroy ourselves. And this would
be because of ignorance, selfishness and evil ambitions of man. For this reason, we need to enlighten the mind and heart of every human person.
We will need the light of faith,
the light of grace and the light of glory to enable us to understand the truth of who we are, what we are called to and how we should live our life in authentic love.

*To live a life in authentic love is to live a godly life.* If it is a godly life, it will always be a good life. *What is a godly life? It is a life of compassion.* Passion and compassion are what make us truly human. When we are compassionate towards our fellowmen, we are in touch with our humanity and with our human feelings. Our compassion for the sufferings of our brothers and sisters will give us the passion and impetus to help them.

A godly life is a life lived virtuously. It is a life lived in honesty and integrity. To live virtuously is to live the life of the Spirit. St Paul speaks of the fruits of a godly life. He compares those who live a worldly life with those who live the life of the Spirit. “Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.” (Gal 5:19-23)

These are the fruits that when we bear, we become filial (befitting of sons and daughters of God).

*DAY 4 – NOVENA TO ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST*

All parents love their children even if they are not their favourites. Parents care for their children even if some of them are rebellious, ingrates, or unkind to them. There is a bond that overcomes all hatred. Few parents, if any, would want to take revenge on their children and make them suffer. There is a bond of nature and of blood.

God is our Father and we are his children. God is compassionate and always forgiving. God does not take revenge on us the moment we repent. God is always forgiving of our sins. King David himself encountered His mercy when he wrote the responsorial psalm, “Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offence. My offences truly I know them; my sin is always before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned; what is evil in your sight I have done.”

Jesus is that lamb the God uses in atoning for our sins and so, we must acknowledge our unworthiness and shortcomings, by way of our sins (what we have done, failed to do, our thoughts, words, actions and our deeds) and approach Jesus in the Confessional in all humility for forgiveness.

God does not take delight in the death of the sinner.

DAY 3 – NOVENA TO ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

Peace be with you.

Intro Prayer

O Glorious Saint John the Baptist, greatest prophet among those born of woman, although you were sanctified in your mother’s womb and did lead a most innocent life, nevertheless it was your will to retire into the wilderness, there to devote yourself to the practice of austerity and penance, obtain for me from your Lord the grace to be wholly detached, at least in my heart, from earthly goods, and to practice Christian mortification with interior recollection and with the spirit of holy prayer.

O Most Zealous Apostle, who, without working any miracle on others, but solely by the example of your life of penance and the power of your word, did draw after you the multitudes, in order to dispose them to receive the Messiah worthily and to listen to his heavenly doctrine, grant that it may be given unto me, by means of your example of a holy life and the exercise of every good work, to bring many souls to God, but above all to those souls that are enveloped in the darkness of error and ignorance and are led astray by vice.

O Martyr Invincible, who, for the honor of God and the salvation of souls, did with firmness and constancy withstand the impiety of Herod even at the cost of your own life, and did rebuke him openly for his wicked and dissolute life, by your prayers obtain for me a heart, brave and generous, in order that I may overcome all human respect and openly profess my faith in loyal obedience to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Pray for me, Saint John the Baptist, that I may be made worthy of the promises of Christ, specifically, (mention request here).

O God, who has made this day to be honorable in our eyes by the commemoration of blessed John the Baptist, grant unto your people the grace of spiritual joy, and direct the minds of all your faithful into the way of everlasting salvation.

Concluding Prayer.

Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory Be
Litany of St. John the Baptist.
Prayer of KSJI

May the darkness of sin and night of unbelief vanish before the light of the Word and the Spirit of Grace. And may the Heart of Jesus live in the Hearts of all People. Amen!

BLESSING

Priest/Deacon: May the Lord bless † us, protect us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

Every parent has a role to play in the life of their children. It was so for Zechariah and Elizabeth in the life John the Baptist, when they followed all the instructions God gave them through the angel concerning the birth of John the Baptist (Jn 1:15). The parents of John the Baptist played an important role in the life of John the Baptist, which can be seen through his ministry.

So, as parents, we are to form our children in the way of the Lord and dedicate them to the service of God, just as Hannah offered Samuel to the Lord.

We might think what we do for our children or loved ones is insignificant. Yet, we never know how these young people will turn out to be in the future, or how our words, actions, and contributions to church and society will transform the world. When we see the full flowering of His work of grace, we will appreciate that in cooperating with it, these young people would in turn be the refuge, inspiration, and strength for others when they grow up.

As children, we ought to obey and respect our parents, so that, our life here on earth may be long (Ex 20:12)

DAY 2 – NOVENA TO SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

We pray for the grace of God to alleviate all our fears,
anxieties and doubts that we may find joy and delight
in the Lord.

Almighty and ever living God, I thank you for your goodness and love upon your sons and daughters throughout this day.

I humbly ask you to listen graciously to all the prayers these your sons and daughters have been making to you, as you did to Zachariah and Elizabeth.

May they find joy and gladness in every facets of their lives, be it their homes, workplaces, schools and their various commanderies.

And may their presence wherever they find themselves, bring rejoicing to those who encounter them. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.

DAY ONE (1)

“Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John” (Luke 1:13).

Dear brothers and sisters, what is it that you have been praying fervently for? The LORD is reassuring you of His prophecy in your life and for that matter, you need not to be afraid.

We are told that, Zachariah and Elizabeth will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at the birth of John. Our task is not just to call people to repent but more importantly, we want to give them fullness of life and love. Many are walking in darkness, meaninglessness and depression. They have lost all hope and zeal in life. It is our task to show them how to live the way Christ has taught us to live, for God and for others. Unless we give our lives for the service of God and others, we cannot find life “For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?” (Mt 16:25f)

May God be gracious to us this day and beyond, and show us His favour, that we may also have joy and gladness all our days.

Amen 🙏🏽
