*DAY 6 – NOVENA TO ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST*
John the Baptist
came to bear
fruits that befits
Jesus, the Light
of God’s kingdom (Galatians 5:16-24)
The world is so divided and
broken today. Mass communication and improved technology have brought the peoples in the world closer on one hand, but it also divides. There is so much information, disinformation and misinformation, so much so we can no longer agree on anything.
How, then, can we dream of a
humanity united in truth and in
love? If humanity is divided, we will eventually destroy ourselves. And this would
be because of ignorance, selfishness and evil ambitions of man. For this reason, we need to enlighten the mind and heart of every human person.
We will need the light of faith,
the light of grace and the light of glory to enable us to understand the truth of who we are, what we are called to and how we should live our life in authentic love.
*To live a life in authentic love is to live a godly life.* If it is a godly life, it will always be a good life. *What is a godly life? It is a life of compassion.* Passion and compassion are what make us truly human. When we are compassionate towards our fellowmen, we are in touch with our humanity and with our human feelings. Our compassion for the sufferings of our brothers and sisters will give us the passion and impetus to help them.
A godly life is a life lived virtuously. It is a life lived in honesty and integrity. To live virtuously is to live the life of the Spirit. St Paul speaks of the fruits of a godly life. He compares those who live a worldly life with those who live the life of the Spirit. “Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.” (Gal 5:19-23)
These are the fruits that when we bear, we become filial (befitting of sons and daughters of God).
