A New Dawn for Young Missionaries: Catholic Diocese of Sunyani Launches "Year of the Youth"
SUNYANI, GHANA – Today, Sunday, February 1, 2026, the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani vibrated with youthful energy as it officially launched the Year of the Youth across all its parishes, schools, and out-stations.
Under the inspiring theme "Catholic Youth on Mission: Youthful, Empowered, and Sent," based on Jeremiah 1:4-8, the Diocese has embarked on a year-long journey dedicated to the spiritual renewal and active engagement of its young members.
A Unified Launch
The day was marked by simultaneous celebrations led by the local clergy. While His Lordship, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, performed the Diocesan launch at the Christ the King Cathedral in Sunyani, pastors and chaplains spearheaded similar ceremonies in rectorates and educational institutions throughout the region.
The launching program followed a structured spiritual path:
* The Proclamation: An Episcopal letter from the Bishop was read during Holy Mass, officially declaring the year open.
* Youth Leadership: In a symbolic move, youth leaders themselves performed the formal launch and presented the Year of the Youth artifacts, including the new logo, banners, and "T" shirts.
* Public Witness: In many communities, the celebration spilled into the streets with floats and processions following the benediction, signaling the Church's presence in the public square.
Why Now?
The declaration of 2026 as the Year of the Youth is a strategic response to several local and global influences. Bishop Gyamfi noted that the initiative is informed by the 2018 Synod of Bishops on Youth and the recent Synod on Synodality.
Closer to home, the Diocese is addressing a "troubling trend" of young people drifting away from the faith and a decrease in the Catholic population according to government data. This year aims to move beyond talking about young people to talking with them, treating them as active "co-responsible agents" of the Church's mission.
The Roadmap Ahead
The Year of the Youth is not merely a celebration but a structured pastoral mission divided into three key areas:
* Identity: Focusing on the "Youthful" nature of the participants.
* Formation: Ensuring they are "Empowered" through spiritual and social programs.
* Mission: Sending them out as "Sent" disciples to proclaim the Gospel.
The year will culminate in a Diocesan Synod on the Youth, which will result in new Synodal Decrees and a formal Diocesan Policy on Youth.
"May we challenge our youth to discover their calling as God's chosen ones... ready to go out on a mission to proclaim, live, and renew the Catholic Christian faith in our time."
Following today's launch, parishes will observe a dedicated week of structured spiritual and social youth programs.
The Year of the Youth will officially run until January 31, 2027, the Memorial of St. John Bosco.
