(Day 1 of 40 Days of Power)

*PROCLAIM A FAST*

*Scripture Reading:* 2 Chronicles 20:1-10

_And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. So Judah gathered together to ask help from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord. *2 Chronicles 20:3-4*_

When we fast, we abstain from natural food for a period so we can depend on and be sustained with the spiritual nourishment that God’s Spirit and His word provide. We turn away from the things of the flesh and turn to the things of the Spirit. The physical hunger we feel when we fast must be channeled into spiritual hunger for God’s presence. It is beneficial when people join in a proclaimed fast to seek God for assistance, deliverance, sustenance, and the many gifts God provides. That is what King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah did.

What do we learn from the passage?

*• Jehoshaphat feared.* Fear is often described as a negative emotion and response to a situation. However, fear can also be a way through which God prompts us and draws our attention to something threatening us. We become primed and alert physically to respond to the threat. In King Jehoshaphat’s case, the alarm drew him to act rightly, to seek an important intervention against the armies invading his nation.

Do you have fears, and how do you respond to them? Do they turn you to the Lord or leave you paralyzed with confusion? If you cry out to God, He will answer.

*• Jehoshaphat set himself to seek the Lord.* Jehoshaphat’s fear led him to seek the Lord. Sometimes alarming situations provide opportunities to trust the Lord and grow our faith in Him. The challenge you are facing maybe a health crisis, financial difficulty, a turbulent marriage, or emotional and mental stress. Whatever it may be, purpose in your heart to seek the Lord about the issue.

*• Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.* The fast Jehoshaphat proclaimed was not just a personal one but a corporate one. The whole nation abstained from food, to pray to God. Similarly, 40 Days of Power is a call to prayer and fasting on both an individual and a corporate level. It is one for the body of Christ to seek the Lord’s face.

*• Judah gathered to ask for help from the Lord.* The people came together for this one purpose – to seek God’s help. And God came through for them. Throughout 40 Days of Power, people will gather in various churches to pray and commune with the Lord. As you pray individually, also make time to pray together with other believers. The Lord will hear and answer us.

_*Prayer:* Heavenly Father, thank you for this season of consecration. Help me to deepen my relationship with you. In Jesus name, Amen!_

OUR GOD IS FAITHFUL

Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 7:1-11

Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments. Deuteronomy 7:9

This is part of Moses’ instructions to Israel as he neared the end of his life. He had observed how easily Israel forgot the faithfulness of the Lord when they got into trouble. Moses knew the challenges that would face the nation as they entered their Promised Land. He wanted them to always remember God’s faithfulness.

The message Moses gave to Israel is relevant for us today.

Too often, Christians think that being children of God makes them immune to the attacks of the devil or that the storms of life would just by-pass them. Exactly the opposite is true. I have seen people who turn their backs on God and walk out of the church because God didn’t stop the storm from coming against them.

Surely, the storms of life will come. They will often come when you least expect them. That makes them a better test of your faith. We would all like it if the troubles that we face were known before they happened so that we could plan better, but that’s not faith. God wants to see how you will react in the times of trouble. Will you react in faith and trust, or doubt and fear? When the enemy comes in like a flood against you, where will you turn to?

The reality of our walk with the Lord is that He never abandons us even when we feel abandoned. The God on the mountain is still God in the valley. When things go wrong, He will make them right. The God of the good times is still God in the bad times. The God of the daytime is still God in the nighttime. Thank God, He’s still God in all circumstances – and nothing is too hard for Him!

Thank God for his faithfulness! Thank God for His promise to never leave us! Thank God for His power to heal, to bless, to forgive and to wash us from all sin! Thank God for supplying our every need! Thank God for his love, His mercy and goodness.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you are a covenant keeper. I thank you Lord that in all situations you remain faithful. In Jesus’ name, Amen._

THE LORD IS YOUR DELIVERER

Scripture Reading: Psalm 18

He sent from above, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me, For they were too strong for me. Psalm 18:16–17

The refreshing feeling, we get from hearing someone share their testimony of God’s deliverance strengthens our faith, and encourages us to know that God will come through for us. David shared his testimony of God’s deliverance. He described how God delivered him:

• He sent from above. When you are sinking down into a pit, you need someone who is above to pull you out. That is how David saw God. He saw the Lord as one who was above him and could pull him out. It is always a blessing to remember that the Lord is far above everything that comes against us. He is above our problems and sends us help from above.

• He drew me out of many waters. From His place above, the Lord drew David out of many waters. David saw himself as a man drowning in deep, turbulent waters. Just when he thought there was no way out, the strong arms of the Lord reached down and pulled him out. If you find yourself in a situation that seems to be drowning you, may the Lord rescue you and draw you out.

• He delivered me from my strong enemy. The strong enemy is the foe that David had tried on several occasions to overcome, which had proven difficult. It is like a problem that does not seem to go away or an addiction that threatens your sanity and survival. The Lord is our deliverer from the enemy that is far greater than us.

Every longstanding problem that has been an albatross on you will not remain there forever. God will step in and bring you and your family out of that challenge.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you are my helper and deliverer. Your mighty hand lifts me up to a high place. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
