New Heights

For the apostles and disciples, walking with Jesus was extraordinary, but on Pentecost day, they were taken into new heights. What a story on Pentecost day!
St. Luke was on point when he wrote: “when the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit…”

The new heights came when we are told; they all began to speak in tongues. This was new because during the ministry of Jesus, they all used basically one language which was familiar in Palestine. But on Pentecost day they spoke different languages: that of Parthians, Medes, Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and
Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene.
St. Luke tells us that “they were astounded, and in amazement they asked, ‘Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?’” I am glad that a testimony was given that day that “it was the mighty acts of God.”
When God visits us in His power He takes us into new heights. The new heights can be seen in the birth of a church; Divine enablement; spiritual gifts; and the internal power to live a Christ-like life over human limitation. Let us briefly reflect on these features of the new heights after Pentecost.

Before Pentecost, many people in Jerusalem saw the followers of Jesus as a sect within Judaism. This perception was widespread that even some Roman officials bought into it. The Roman historian Tacitius and the Roman governor Pliny the Younger described Christianity as a sect within Judaism. But on Pentecost day everyone who wished to see, saw something different. Thousands of people came from all walks of life and were initiated into the Church. This was truly a new height to the amazement of all.

The second feature is that Pentecost gave the apostle a divine enablement. Before Pentecost they were hiding in fear in the upper room, but when they were enabled, they emerged on the streets of Jerusalem forcefully preaching and baptizing as if the religious and political leaders were on a sabbatical. As you read this piece today, I pray for your spiritual enablement so that what seems to hold you down, the Holy Spirit will set you free to live your life for Christ.

The third element of the new heights is the gifts that Pentecost brings to God’s church. We pray that God will continue to bless His church with the gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and the fear of the Lord. These are the gifts that will enable one to live a Christ-centred life. We pray that the Holy Spirit will take us into new heights of holiness.

Twenty-two Theology four seminarians, one unforgettable moment a symphony of joy, resilience, sacrifice, and grace. What began as a journey of faith, prayer, and perseverance now blossoms into a celebration of purpose fulfilled.
Through silent sacrifices, countless lessons, and steadfast hope, they have walked the path with courage and devotion. Today, their smiles tell stories of battles conquered, dreams nurtured, and God’s unfailing guidance.
May their light continue to shine brightly in the vineyard of the Lord, and may this graduation be only the beginning of a life poured out in love, service, and truth.

the Upper Room

Unique locations have carried with them stories that define some key moments in our earthly journey. Can we ever forget the famous meeting at the Oaks of Mamre? While sitting in his tent God came calling and Abraham opened his heart to God.

Another important place can be Shechem where the Jews renewed their commitment to God. I know for certain that you also have a unique place in the Bible where a story can be narrated. But today, I would like us to reflect on the Upper Room and its place in Christian spirituality.

St. John tells us: “And when Jesus had been taken up to heaven the apostles returned to Jerusalem…when they entered the city they went to the upper room where they were staying…All devoted themselves with one accord to prayer….”
What is the symbol of the upper room in Christian spirituality? The upper room was the place where Christ celebrated the “First Holy Mass” and instituted the priesthood. Every day at Mass we recall the Upper Room event. I would like to reflect with you three other insights associated with the upper room.

Firstly, we can associate the upper room to a place of prayer. When they gathered there without Jesus, it wasn’t a time to feast but a time dedicated to prayer. In our contemporary times the upper room can be associated with “Perpetual Adoration Chapels.” A place of silent adoration of the Lord and intense prayer.

Secondly, after the death and resurrection of Jesus the upper room became a place of waiting in expectancy. For some of them as they waited in the upper room, they were hopeful that the Lord will fulfill his promise to them while for others the upper room became a place of security for fear of the Jews.
They waited in their diverse dispositions of life. Today, every church carries the symbolism of waiting in the upper room. Like the disciples of old, we wait for the return of the Lord. Let your upper room be filled with positive energy that the Lord will never disappoint you.

The last symbolism of the upper room is that it carries the nuance of communion. In Christian spirituality, no one stands alone in the upper room. Though some waited in fear, they drew support from their fellow brothers and sisters in the upper room. May you never stand alone in life. I pray that God will send his Angels to accompany you.
Come let us go to the upper room, to wait together in prayer. Come Holy Spirit and fill our hearts.
