Deaconess left deaf in one ear regains hearing During Communion Service
A deaconess of The Church of Pentecost, Buduburam Top District of the Kasoa Area, has suddenly regained hearing in her right ear during a Sunday Communion Service, a year after a violent attack that doctors told her had permanently damaged it.
Deaconess Rose Cobbold of the Estate Assembly, Buduburam Top District, Kasoa Area, shared her testimony at the assembly on Sunday, 4 October 2026.
Cobbold said the incident happened on the morning of Sunday, 1 June 2025. A young man who lived nearby with his mother, and whom she had often helped with food and other items, was trying to break down his motherโs door. When he said he had no airtime, she offered him her phone.
As she turned to leave, she said, he struck her on the back of the neck with a millstone, knocking her unconscious. He then picked up a concrete block about five inches thick, tried unsuccessfully to hit another woman nearby, and struck Cobbold on the right side of the face and head as she lay on the ground. She said the blow crushed the area around her right ear, tore the ear, and ripped out some of her hair.
She was taken to Gomoa Buduburam Hospital and referred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, where she spent four days in intensive care before regaining consciousness.
Cobbold said she was left completely deaf in the right ear and could hear only by turning her left ear toward a speaker. Examinations over the following year, she said, showed that the internal structures were crushed and that no auditory passage remained.
Surgery was scheduled but aborted after a senior consultant reviewed her scans. According to Cobbold, the doctors concluded that operating at Korle Bu risked brain injury because of how close the damage was to the brain. Her case was put on hold until the annual visit of foreign specialists, expected between September and November.
In the meantime, she continued to worship, including during a 40-day fasting and prayer programme at PIWC Cape Coast. After receiving prayers from Pastor Samuel Kwaku Asare on a Friday, she said she felt a strong prompting the next day to return to Buduburam and worship with her congregation.
Pastor Prince Duvorn Daniels-Hortsoe led the prayers and Communion service on Sunday, 4 October 2026. Cobbold said that during worship she heard an inner voice telling her to give herself fully to the service because a miracle would happen. She prayed intensely and wept.
As Pastor Duvorn preached on the topic โMeet Jesus as a Packageโ and emphasised the woman with the issue of blood, Zacchaeus, the blind man Bartimaeus, and the man at the pool, she said she heard the voice again, this time telling her to cover her good left ear. She did so.
According to her, her children spoke to her during the service, and she said she heard them clearly through the right ear. She tested it repeatedly with other people and said she could hear distinctly each time.
Cobbold said she could not keep the experience to herself and told Pastor Duvorn about the development. She added that she had earlier given money set aside for her surgery to a district offering, telling the District Pastor that the funds belonged to God.
She presented her recovery as evidence that God acts where medical professionals see no hope, and urged others in similar situations not to give up.
