What is ?

*Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest fraternal organizations. It’s a non-religious, non-political society that focuses on moral self-improvement, charity, and brotherhood.
Here’s the core of it:
*1. Basic structure*
- *Local groups = "Lodges"*: Members meet in a Masonic Lodge. Each lodge is chartered under a "Grand Lodge" that usually covers a state or country.
- *Members = "Masons" or "Freemasons
- *3 main degrees*: Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason. You go through initiation ceremonies that use symbolism and allegory to teach lessons.
*2. What they actually do*
- *Ritual & symbolism*: Meetings involve ceremonies with aprons, symbols like the square & compass, and stories drawn from stonemasonry tools. The idea is "building character" like medieval stonemasons built cathedrals.
- *Charity*: Freemasons are huge on philanthropy. Shriners Hospitals for Children, Masonic homes for seniors, scholarships, and disaster relief are big examples.
- *Fellowship*: Lots of it is just community — dinners, mentorship, networking. Think of it as a cross between a service club and a philosophical society.
*3. What it’s NOT*
- *Not a religion*: You have to believe in a "Supreme Being" to join, but they don’t care which one. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Deists, etc. are all members. Discussions of sectarian religion and partisan politics are banned in lodge.
- *Not a secret society*: Their buildings, membership lists, and charitable work are public. The "secrets" are basically handshakes and ritual details — like a fraternity.
- *Not controlling the world*: Despite conspiracy theories, lodges are decentralized. There’s no global "Grand Master" giving orders.
*4. History in 30 seconds*
Started with real stonemason guilds in the Middle Ages. By the 1600s-1700s it evolved into "speculative" Masonry — using the tools as metaphors. The first Grand Lodge formed in London in 1717. It spread fast during the Enlightenment. Lots of famous members: George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Mozart, Simón Bolívar, Winston Churchill.
*5. Freemasonry in Ghana*
Pretty active. The Grand Lodge of Ghana was consecrated in 2009 and oversees lodges in Accra and other regions. There are also District Grand Lodges under the English, Scottish, and Irish constitutions that have been here since colonial times.
