πŸ“œπŸ“œ```TEXT:2 CORINTHIANS 2:16,17```πŸ“œπŸ“œ

πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ" (2 CORINTHIANS 2:17).*_

*The deliberate distortion of the message of a diplomatic dispatch, _Ems Telegram,_ caused the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Early that year, the vacant Spanish throne was offered to Prince Leopold of the Hohenzollern dynasty which also ruled Prussia. The French Emperor, Napoleon III, worried about the extension of Prussian influence to Spain, voiced his concerns to King Wilhelm 1 of Prussia. The king agreed to withdraw his support for Prince Leopold. However, he courteously declined to give a written guarantee to the French ambassador, Benedetti. The Prussian king later sent a telegram to his Chancellor, Otto Von Bismarck, to brief him on the development. Bismarck mischievously altered the telegram to create the impression that the king and the ambassador were disrespectful of each other. The inflamed emotion led to war.*

*In our text, Apostle Paul contrasts his ministry with those mixing the words of Christ with Jewish traditions and the Law of Moses. The hallmark of a faithful preacher, he stresses, is to boldly and sincerely focus on the message as received from God.*

*In our age, some adulterate the word of God by subtracting from or adding to it or through outright misrepresentation. However, faithfully translating the Bible into local languages does not amount to corrupting the Scripture. It is only an attempt to take the gospel to people in languages they best understand, and can therefore easily respond to its injunctions. Similarly, selecting a few Bible passages as references for a message, where there are many others, cannot mean subtracting from the word of God, nor does the use of contemporary illustrations in preaching constitute an addition to the Word. We add to the word of God by introducing human fads, fancies and false interpretations. Some subtract from the word of God when they routinely skip messages that could make people uncomfortable, sad or fearful, such as repentance, restitution, God's judgment or even hellfire. The preacher of the Word must be faithful to the message sent from heaven, to avoid incurring the wrath of God.*

πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not" (SONG OF SOLOMON 3:2).*_

*Many times, we leave undone things that should demand our urgent attention. We desire a better and more oppotune time. But it never comes, because in reality, the best time to attend to matters of such importance is now. Immediate action bears bountiful fruits, while procrastination results in huge losses and sometimes, avoidable suffering and pain.*

*The personality in our passage represents the Church of Jesus Christ. She faced sore trials, personal discomfort and inconvenience in her search for her beloved Saviour and Lord. Her account shows that we cannot find Christ by merely sitting in the cool comfort of our private space. While in bed, probably in a dream, she sought the Lord whom she loved so much, but did not find Him. Disappointed, she rose up and headed into the city, even at a most inconvenient hour. She walked the streets and highways all to no avail. She ran into the watchmen of the city, whose job it was to apprehend missing people, but they were of no help in searching out those who had lost their way. She continued her search, and only a short distance from the watchmen, she found her beloved. Holding tightly to him, and without letting him out of her sight, she brought him home. Wearied from his wandering, he quickly fell asleep. She, in turn, promptly warned all potential intruders to steer clear of her beloved and allow him to take a deserved rest.*

*We must desire fellowship with Christ more than anything else in life. And where this fellowship is broken either because of carelessness or deliberate disobedience and rebellion, you must arise and "Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near". You should spare no effort, search for Him with all your heart, and never give up until you have the witness of the Holy Spirit that He has accepted you, and that the peace and comfort of God now rest in your soul. If you are a watchman, a minister in the house of God, you must not be merely satisfied with putting up an appearance in your duty post. Do all you can to bring lost and wandering souls back to the Lord.*

*_The Telegraph_ of 22 August 2020 ran a story titled, _Rare Snake to be Reintroduced Across England._ It was reported that a rare snake was set to be reintroduced into parts of Britain. The head of Natural England warned that climate change meant the snakes had to be spread across the country in order to survive. The smooth snake is so rare and secretive that experts have no approximate idea of the surviving numbers. Some experts believe that reintroducing the snakes, while a noble goal, can be risky with potential downsides, including harming native species, introducing diseases, and disrupting the ecosystems.*

*Apostle Peter, in today's text, warns of the danger of reintroducing sin and other damnable practices into a person's life. The warning is primarily to believers, who, having been saved, are now enticed by the lure of carnality and worldly treasures. While "The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations", He also has the power to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished. This is contrary to modern-day preachers of eternal security, who teach that once someone is saved, he is always saved. Peter contradicted this false doctrine by his remarks about the "natural brute beasts" speaking "evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption". Like Baalam of old, preachers of false doctrine deceive their hearers into continuing in sin under the guise that grace covers all sins, and that once the sinner has confessed Christ, he can never lose his salvation.*

*There is a difference between backsliding, a careless and unguarded slip into sin and apostasy, which is a deliberate departure from the faith. Those who accidentally fall into sin can be redeemed, but apostates cannot. Such souls will end up in hell, prepared for the devil and those who align with him. Paul the apostle also warned, in his inspired writing, that if any man draws back, the Lord shall have no pleasure in him. Make sure that you remain in the company of true believers: never turning back but believing until the final saving of the soul.*

πŸ“œπŸ“œ```TEXT:1 TIMOTHY 4:6-9```πŸ“œπŸ“œ

πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come" (1 TIMOTHY 4:8).*_

*"Godliness", said James Drummond Burns, the Presbyterian minister and poet, "is the knowledge of God in the mind; the grace of God in the soul; the love of God in the heart; and the obedience of God in the life."*

*Our text establishes that godliness is profitable. It is not limited to the mood or situation around the godly. Equipped by God in all situations and under all conditions, the godly pleases God. The challenges may be overwhelming, yet the godly must hold on to God. He will abundantly reward His own in due season if they faint not. Apostle Paul, the writer of this epistle, also highlights the limitations of bodily exercise. The entertainment industry exalts physical exercises and pleasure above ministerial discipline, to the extent that pastoral consecration is not given a place.*

*Discipline, with consecration, is key to the satisfactory ex*****on of our calling and duties. Despite Job's unfavorable situations, he maintained his integrity. He kept his faith and refused to curse God even when his wife suggested that he do so. For a young person, ministerial work becomes arduous when faced with ungodly and unfriendly opposers of the gospel who perceive gospel ministry as a means to make fast money. In a challenging world, where virtue and godliness are undesirable, the preacher must purpose in his heart not to be defiled or corrupted by the god of this world. Regrettably, some ministers have been swept off in the rat race to make ends meet.*

*For Timothy to qualify and be distinguished as a good minister of Christ, he must be knowledgeable and able to teach the church under his leadership. Ministerial privileges are not for massaging ego, projecting self, or entertaining idle people with itching ears. It is a call to responsibility and accountability. The minister is responsible for ensuring the sheep are nourished with a spiritual balanced diet of God's word, and shield them from every wind of doctrine. He is equally accountable to God. A day of reckoning comes when his work shall be tested by fire and rewarded accordingly.*

*Beyond the light afflictions that may come our way as saints, God's promises are sure and transcend the earthly realm. An eternal weight of glory awaits us in heaven if we continue faithfully to the end.*

*Odette Sansome was a British spy during _World War II_ who encouraged planting a ruse among the Germans that she was married to a nephew of the British Prime Minister, Peter Churchill. She took on his surname. However, Peter was another spy who bore no relationship with Winston Churchill beyond the similarity in surname. When eventually Odette was captured by the N***s, the prank seemed to work. The Germans spared her from ex*****on, the fate that awaited all spies. Even after she was condemned to death, the sentence was not carried out because someone was keeping her as a potential bargaining chip with the British. They were convinced they held a high-value prisoner, and she gladly did nothing to correct the impression. When the Germans began to lose the war, a top-level N**i officer took personal custody of Odette and drove across enemy lines to surrender himself and deliver her to the Allies as a sign of good faith. He wanted amnesty in return. Instead, he was disarmed, arrested and made to rue the foolishness of his assumption.*

*Used under false pretences, a name saved a clever spy from death. No one, however, should presume to claim the name and glory that belong to God alone, under any guise or circumstance, or for any purpose. God is the Almighty, unique, and peerless. His glory surpasses all, and His power is unlimited. He deserves to be worshipped rather than any angel or prominent religious figure. Some misguided religious groups have established a system of worship that seeks to deify their founders, elevating them almost to the same pedestal as the omnipotent God. Such a practice has no place among the worshippers of the true God. King Herod, in his vainglorious fanfare, received adulation due only to a deity, and he was instantly struck down by an angel.*

*We should be wary of praise singers who tend to go over the top in their sycophantic admiration, usually pursuing some personal advantage. Do not permit anyone to set you up in conflict with God; it does not end well.*

*_'No food for the lazy man'_ is an age-old adage still relevant today. Laziness is a mental state of human choice. No one is born lazy. Indeed, the human brain is a gift from God to everyone, helping them to function fully. The brainstem does everything you need to live, like breathing, pumping blood, sleeping and waking up. The diligent man wakes up and tills his land while the lazy one wilfully sleeps on.*

*Today's text extols hard work. Since Israel's economy at this time was primarily focused on the fields for the production of crops and livestock, the author encourages all to rise and work in the fields. Those who failed to work are said to be 'void of understanding'.*

*Beyond the alarm clocks now available to help us wake up from sleep at the set time, the cerebellum helps everyone jump, walk, play, and pick up things. It controls all human movements and balance. Again, it depends on one to choose to walk and the other to sit down and do nothing. The limbic system is where human emotions live. Memories also live in the limbic system. Those who employ their emotions positively build for themselves positive, proactive and progressive attitudes that activate success vibes within their mental makeup. Those who are redundant in their attitudes to life refuse to activate their positive emotions and instead accentuate negative, self-entitled, and selfish feelings about themselves. These trains of emotions ruin their capacity to achieve success. They rob themselves of God's innate gift for them to live a prosperous life.*

*There is a spiritual poem for the sluggard:*

_*"How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard?*_
_*When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?*_
_*Yet a little sleep, a little slumber,*_
_*A little folding of the hands to sleep:*_

*The 1936 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin are unique in the history of global games. Adolf Hi**er and his propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, had intended to use the sports to promote his N**i party and showcase the supremacy of the A***n (Caucasian) race in the world. Unfortunately, the Olympic star was Jesse Owens, an African American from the United States. He won four gold medals within an hour. Hi**er left the stadium disappointed, and his plan of glorifying a race instead of God crumbled.*

*In our text, the Lord promised to redeem Israel because the nation was precious. He assured them of divine protection in danger and tribulation. The Lord told them not to entertain fear, promising to gather them from the ends of the earth. The central message is that Israel and all who are called by the name of the Lord exist to glorify God. What do we mean when we say man was created to glorify God? Does this imply that God wants to use us to advance His greatness? What proof must we show that man was created to glorify God? And how can we glorify God?*

*The purpose of the creation of man cannot be different from the reason God created the world. Psalm 19:1 says, "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork". Hence, Isaiah says we are created for the glory of God. The word glory relates to dignity, honour, praise and worship. God is not trying to use us by instructing us to glorify Him. Whatever we do, we cannot make God bigger than who He is. Since we are created in the image of God, our primary responsibility is to reflect the nature of God in whatever we do, including dressing, eating and drinking. We can also glorify God by praising Him with our lips, obeying His Word, praying in Jesus' name, preaching the gospel, exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit, and showing faithfulness in persecution.*

*Alexander Hamilton, one of America's Founding Fathers, who served as the first US Secretary of the Treasury, observed that "A fondness for power is implanted in most men, and it is natural to abuse it when acquired". Today, many nations are grappling with challenges posed by the abuse of office, especially by public officeholders. Even the post-tenure probe, which has become traditional in many countries, has not deterred many from stealing public funds and commiting many acts of impunity. This is only a reflection of the depravity of man.*

*Baasha ruled Israel for over two decades. Even though he came to power through a coup that saw him kill his predecessor, it was God's providence that permitted him to stay on. Yet he could not learn from history that "It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness". He was not only wicked, but like Jeroboam, he led Israel to sin and to provoke the Holy One to anger with their iniquities.*

*God was particularly pained by the fact that Baasha was exalted "out of the dust". He was most unworthy to be king in Israel and therefore should have been humbled by the significant office he was privileged to occupy. Instead, he became full of himself and waxed gross in wickedness. When the wicked mount the throne, the people are doomed. The throne of unrighteousness can only succeed in multiplying unrighteousness in the land. For this abuse, the Lord passed a fearful judgment upon Baasha and his posterity (verses 3 and 4).*

*As you reflect on the reign - and ruin - of Baasha this day, consider also how the Lord has elevated you to some position of influence. How much value have you added? Do you glorify the Lord with the privileges and opportunities given to you? You abuse authority when you act with impunity and leverage your privileged position to trample on or take advantage of others, or divert official items to personal property. You can avoid ending disastrously like Baasha if you will prayerfully resolve to walk only in the path of humility and righteousness.*

πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia" (2 CORINTHIANS 2:13).*_

*A troop of monkeys got to the bank of a river but could not cross because of the strong currents and the possibility of predators, such as crocodiles, in the river. Moreover, they had young, vulnerable ones who could not survive the crossing. But they held on to one another in a chain and climbed to the top of a tall tree on one riverbank. The one at the head led the chain of monkeys to jump and grab a branch on the opposite bank. The vulnerable ones then rode on the back of others to the opposite side. At the same time, the last monkey in the chain on the departure side released its grip, and the chain dangled across the river to the other side.*

*This story highlights the importance of love and partnership in human endeavours, especially in gospel work. In our text, Apostle Paul was enjoying a breakthrough at Troas, but his ministry partner, Titus, was unavailable. He soon left because he longed for his absent brother, a good example of how partnership contributes to successful ministry. Christian ministers should not be lone rangers in ministry. Partnership in God's work enables us to harness fellow believers' diverse gifts and skills. These attributes make us a good fit for ministry together, since "Iron sharpeneth iron". A stronger believer can help lift a weaker or discouraged one. Moreover, "two are better than one". Two people attacking a common obstacle from different angles are likely more effective than a lone ranger, fighting and giving up when he becomes weak or weary. Furthermore, the outcome of combined efforts is always greater and better.*

*The Lord Himself gave an example by selecting the twelve disciples to join Him in ministry and by sending out the seventy in pairs. However, this partnership should be based on shared Christian virtues and values: two cannot work together except they agree. Christian partners in ministry and also in marriage have to depend on God for enabling grace and guidance to achieve success in life and fruitfulness in the gospel work. We should be like Titus, who was a valued member of the team. His contribution was acknowledged in other parts of the Scripture, and it shows that our absence will be felt if we add value to the team. When we bring our unique virtues, gifts and attributes to the ministry of the word, the work will prosper, we shall benefit from others and be a blessing to them, and God shall be glorified.*

πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly? How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands" (JOB 34:18, 19).*_

*Monarchs are known to exercise absolute power. Their authority is considered final and unquestionable. This concept of imperial power tends to make some monarchs and leaders authoritarian and domineering. They become autocratic, dictatorial, oppressive, and intolerant of opposition. To them, love and empathy towards their subjects are strange bedfellows. And just like English historian Lord Acton said, they allow the absolute power they wield to corrupt them.*

*This tyrannical stance is entirely unlike the Almighty God, the true and only Potentate who has and controls all power and authority. Though He is absolute in power and authority, He is yet loving. Elihu asserts God's justice and sovereignty in today's passage. He states that God is impartial in His dealings with men. He sees all, and no one can condemn or challenge His actions. He is just and cannot make wrong or perverted judgments. His actions are guided by love, wisdom and righteousness. Elihu's message encourages humility and submission to God's will, even in the face of suffering or apparent injustice.*

*As we consider God's absolute power and authority, we must understand that He is unlike human absolutes. He is not detached or harsh in exercising His power towards His creation. Rather, whatever He does is with a deep commitment to them. His rule and actions are rooted in love and care for His people. His power and love go hand in hand. It is applied with compassion and desire for our well-being.*

*Understanding God's sovereignty in His dealings with us as His children is crucial to maintaining a healthy relationship with Him. It helps us have a proper perspective on challenges that God allows in our lives. Sometimes, like Job, we may experience bitter and adverse circumstances. If God allows such to come our way, it is not because He hates us and wants to be harsh and brutal towards us. His actions are always for our good. Therefore, we must not question, resist or fight His rule over our lives. Instead, we must count ourselves fortunate to be under the care and protection of the loving Creator, who has our best interests at heart and orders everything that comes our way, whether good or bad, for our ultimate good and blessings.*
