IS THERE A PLACE FOR RELIGIOUS BROTHERHOOD IN 2023?

During my first interview at the English house of the Servants of the Paraclete in 1990, I was asked if I felt called to the Brotherhood or Priesthood in the Congregation. It was a reasonable question bearing in mind that I had completed four years of Diocesan Seminary formation, before leaving in 1984. My reply to that question was spontaneous, “I feel I am being drawn to the Servants of the Paraclete; it doesn’t seem to matter whether it is as a Priest or Brother.”

Now in 2023, and even as a fulfilled Priest of the Servants of the Paraclete, I still experience the same question and answer, though I would express things differently: Membership, rather than Brotherhood or Priesthood of The Religious Congregation of the Servants of the Paraclete is not only my home, but my major identity; so have I resolved my Priesthood-Brotherhood ambiguity?

Perhaps so, especially for my own sense of Calling, yet I am left with a more urgent question: Is there still a place for Religious Brotherhood in our Church, particularly in Clerical Congregations?Five years ago, I decided that I would not find an answer to this urgent question without taking a few risks, so I floated my question and my ideas to the Servants of the Paraclete.

After what seemed a long delay, but with good reason and wisdom, I was given permission to found a new Community of Religious Brothers in Goaso Diocese, Ahafo Region, Ghana. Perhaps, you would like to assist the Brothers of John the Beloved (BJB) and me with your prayer support. For my part, and on behalf of the three first Aspirants of the Brothers of John the Beloved (BJB), I will offer our history and our hopes for the future, week by week on this page. Stay blessed, stay well.

“Ash Wednesday is the day to ponder over our mortality. Today is the day to celebrate life as we realize that we all will turn into dust one day. On the first day of Lent, let us remind ourselves that we are here to do good to the people around us.

Consecrated life is born and reborn of an encounter with Jesus as he is: poor, chaste and obedient… And while worldly life soon leaves our hands and hearts empty, life in Jesus fills us with peace to the very end, as in the Gospel, where Simeon and Anna come happily to the sunset of their lives with the Lord in their arms and joy in their hearts.

HAVE YOU WONDERED WHAT OUR MISSION IS AS A NEW CONGREGATION IN THE CHURCH?

We the brothers of John the beloved with Our founder, Rev. Fr.Phillip Taylor are first inspired by the gospel quote "Mother thy son; and Son thy mother".

As Jesus hung on the cross, scripture records that He spoke several final words or statements and one of them, which is clearly recorded in John 19:26–27, expresses the Lord’s care and concern for his mother:

“When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, ‘Woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ From that time on, this disciple took her (the mother of Jesus) Mary our mother into his home.” The disciple whom Jesus addressed was John the Evangelist, also known as John the Beloved; the name our congregation bears.

Despite Jesus' excruciating physical agony, he was concerned about the welfare of His mother (Mary) and whatever pain she was experiencing. With His thoughts on his mother's future security and protection, He entrusted her into the care of John, his Beloved disciple. This is our mission and service as a baby religious congregation to the mother church and all God's people.

Our vision is to open our doors in the "soon future" to those destitute priests, religious and lay faithful just like John took with him the vulnerable mother of Jesus to his home. Hence, our ministry is hospitality to all.
