More Prayer, Less Screens: Raising Children Who Can Meet God in Silence
A quiet child in church with a phone may look like peace, but it could be costing something deeper — their ability to pray, listen and encounter God.
The easiest way to keep a child quiet in church may be the very thing weakening their faith. What looks like convenience today can quietly become spiritual distraction tomorrow.
Giving children phones or tablets during Holy Mass may seem helpful, but it quietly replaces prayer with distraction. Mass is not entertainment time; it is a sacred moment for formation and encounter with God. When children scroll, play games or watch videos, their attention shifts from silence and worship to constant stimulation.
Phone dependence often begins early, which is why many children struggle to sit quietly without screens. The real issue is not the child, but what has replaced intentional formation. What feels like convenience in the moment can slowly shape habits of distraction and weaken a child’s capacity for prayer.
Children who are learning to pray need guidance suited to their level. Children’s Mass or children’s liturgy creates space for them to listen to God’s Word, participate actively and grow in faith without relying on digital devices. This supports true formation rather than “spiritual babysitting.”
Parents are encouraged to choose patience over convenience — to sit with their children, pray with them and help them encounter God in silence. Phones will not remain in their hands forever, but the faith intentionally planted in their hearts can remain for life.
