TEXTS: Luke 3:19–20; Matthew 11:18–19; Matthew 11:4–5
PREACHER: Dcns. Eunice Arthur Damoah
INTRODUCTION
Beloved in the Lord, today we reflect on a powerful and sobering truth: walking with God does not exempt us from trials. In fact, sometimes obedience to God leads us into places we never expected—places of confinement, loneliness, and testing.
John the Baptist, a forerunner of Christ, a man filled with the Spirit, a bold voice crying in the wilderness, found himself in prison. Not because he sinned. Not because he failed. But because he stood firmly for truth.
This challenges a common belief many of us hold—that doing right always leads to immediate reward. John’s life teaches us otherwise.
1. THE PRISON OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
Luke 3:19–20 tells us that John was imprisoned because he rebuked Herod’s sin. He stood for righteousness, and it cost him his freedom.
Sometimes, your “prison” is the result of your obedience:
- You refused to compromise, and now you are isolated.
- You stood for truth, and now you are misunderstood.
- You chose holiness, and now doors seem closed.
But hear this: a prison entered through obedience is not a place of defeat—it is a place of divine purpose.
2. THE REALITY OF DOUBT IN DIFFICULT SEASONS
In Matthew 11, we see something surprising. John, the same man who declared Jesus as the Lamb of God, now sends a message asking, “Are You the One, or should we expect another?”
Even the strongest believers can have moments of doubt.
When:
- Prayers seem unanswered
- Expectations are unmet
- Situations grow worse instead of better
Doubt can creep in.
But notice—John did not run away from God; he reached out to Him. That is perseverance: bringing your questions to God, not turning away from Him.
3. JESUS’ RESPONSE: EVIDENCE OVER EXPLANATION
In Matthew 11:4–5, Jesus responds not with a direct “yes,” but with evidence:
- The blind receive sight
- The lame walk
- The dead are raised
- The gospel is preached
In other words, Jesus was saying: Look at what God is doing, even if it’s not what you expected.
Sometimes, God does not explain your situation—He reveals His works.
Your breakthrough may not come in the form you desire, but God is still working.
4. NOT EVERY PRISON WILL OPEN
This is the hardest truth: John was not released from prison. He eventually died there.
But Jesus later said, “Among those born of women, there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist.”
John’s success was not in his escape—it was in his obedience.
Your “prison” may be:
- A place of waiting
- A place of preparation
- Or an altar of sacrifice
Not every trial ends with deliverance, but every trial can end with fulfillment of purpose.
5. THE CALL TO PERSEVERANCE
Perseverance means:
- Choosing obedience over popularity
- Standing for truth when it is costly
- Trusting God when answers are delayed
- Continuing your assignment through pain and uncertainty
It means saying:
"Lord, even if this situation does not change, I will remain faithful."
6. YOUR LIFE IS A TESTIMONY
John’s voice still speaks today, even though his life ended in prison.
Likewise, when you persevere:
- Your faith becomes a testimony
- Your endurance becomes a message
- Your life points others to Christ
People may not remember your struggles, but they will remember your steadfastness.
CONCLUSION
Beloved, God is not unjust. He sees your faithfulness. He knows your struggles. And He is working out a greater purpose—even in your “prison.”
Do not give up.
Do not lose heart.
Hold on to your assignment.
Because at the end of it all, like John, it will be said that you fulfilled your purpose.
FINAL CHARGE
Stay faithful.
Stay focused.
Stay obedient.
For when we persevere in faith, our lives will testify of God—no matter the outcome.
Stay faithful. Stay focused. Stay obedient.
Your life will testify of God—no matter the outcome.
