*THE POWER OF GOD’S MERCY*

> _Have mercy on me, O Lord! Consider my trouble from those who hate me, You who lift me up from the gates of death, That I may tell of all Your praise In the gates of the daughter of Zion. I will rejoice in Your salvation. *Psalm 9:13–14*_

In view of God’s past deliverances, David now called on God to respond to his affliction and give him reason to praise. The psalmist asked the Lord to show him mercy.

God deals with people in two ways. He can deal with us according to His mercy or according to his judgment. When we fall on God’s mercy, He extends His kindness to us. When we come under God’s judgment, He extends His wrath to us. In his present crisis, David fell on God’s mercy. We can do the same when people pursue us wrongly.

Why do we need God’s mercy?

- *God’s mercy makes Him consider us.* David threw himself on God’s mercy and called on the Lord to take note of what his enemies were doing against him. That is a lesson for us. We can also trust that the Lord of mercy will take notice of what we are going through.

- *God’s mercy makes Him lift us up.* The psalmist was confident that the Lord of mercy would lift him up from ‘the gates of death’. He knew that if the Lord did not intervene, his enemies would kill him. However, David was convinced that God would deliver him. We can also trust the Lord to deliver us from the trap of the enemy.

- *God’s mercy gives us a testimony.* Though David was in a very precarious situation, he had the assurance that the Lord would give him a testimony. Rather than going down into the pit of his enemies, the psalmist promised to testify to God’s deliverance.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, I receive your mercy in this time of need. Thank you for deliverance. In Jesus’ name, *Amen!*_

*MIND BATTLES*

*Scripture Reading:* 2 Corinthians 10

> _For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, *2 Corinthians 10:4–5*_

Every Christian is engaged in warfare. We fight to enforce the victory that Christ won for us through His death and resurrection.

Our enemy’s chief strategy is to make us think that what Christ did for us is not enough. The evil one wants us to doubt the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. He goes about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. The only ones whom he devours are those who believe in his lies and deception. Don’t believe in the devil’s lie.

The mind is the battlefield where thoughts and reasonings that are contrary to God's Word, need to be captured and submitted to Christ, our Commander. Every thought that makes you doubt your salvation in Christ is of the evil one. Every thought that magnifies Satan’s power so that you live in fear, is not of God.

Such thoughts must be captured and cast down. Just as enemy soldiers are captured in war, so rebel thoughts must be taken captive and made to submit to Christ. Our battle against the devil takes place right between our ears. The spiritual weapons given to us are designed for the express purpose of taking every thought captive and making them obedient to Christ. Keeping our minds completely stayed upon the Lord gives us victory in spiritual warfare.

These weapons of ours are for the casting down of two things: Imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. Both of these areas deal with the mind. The enemy always seeks to bring imaginations and arguments into our minds to cause us to doubt God’s promises. His desire is to see us walk in unbelief. That is why we must continually fight the good fight of faith.

Exalt Christ in your mind. Let Him rule over every imagination and idea in your mind.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, I cast down every thought of fear and defeat. Thank you for the victory of the Cross. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*GOD’S UNSHAKABLE WORD*

*Scripture Reading:* Psalm 119:86-96

> Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven. *Psalm 119:89*_

God's word is settled. It is fixed. It is permanent. It will not change. It will not lose its power.

When God gives us a word, He settles it in heaven first and then He works it out on earth. That is why Jesus taught us to pray, ‘thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven’. The settled word in heaven must be settled on earth.

Jesus overcame the temptations of the evil one through the Word of God. He knew who He was and what the Word had said about Him, so He overcame. We will also overcome if we settle our minds and words on God’s Word.

What God has settled in your case in heaven will also be settled here on earth. For a moment, there will be warfare, there will be battles; but in the end, what is settled in heaven will be settled on earth.

‘Forever O Lord your word is settled in heaven’. We are not just seeking God to settle His word; He has already done that. What we are seeking is for what He has settled in heaven to be settled on earth.

Time does not diminish the power of God’s word or His promises. Distance does not diminish the power of God’s word or His promises. What He said a thousand years ago is as fresh as the first time He spoke it. What He said to you thirty years ago is as real today as the first time He spoke it.

Our minds must be settled on the settled Word of God.

- It is settled that God is the Creator of heaven and earth.

- It is settled that God loves you.

- It is settled that God has a plan for you.

- It is settled that God is working out His plan for you.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, your word is settled in heaven. I receive full manifestation of your promises in my life. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*RIGHT WAYS OF THINKING*

*Scripture Reading:* Philippians 4

> _Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. *Philippians 4:8*_

The Bible has a lot to say about the way we think. God, who created our brains and thinking faculties, wants us to regulate the way we think. Our predominant thoughts willshapet our livesin one way or another. If we keep our minds on the wrong thoughts, they will soon lead us to take wrong actions. If we meditate on godly ideas, we will soon find ourselves acting in a godly manner.

In our passage for today, Apostle Paul admonishes us to reflect and meditate upon eight positive principles of thinking that will lead to a victorious Christian life.

These are the six questions we must ask ourselves as we think through what to say and do. They are difficult questions that each of us must wrestle with as we seek to live the life that Christ wants us to live.

1. *Is it True?* The truth of God’s Word is the foundation of all truths. That is what we build our lives on.

2. *Is it Noble?* This has to do with sincerity and dignity. Our thoughts must be dignified and model the best of our humanity.

3. *Is it Just?* What we consider to be right or wrong must reflect God’s standards. The Lord is our example of righteous judgments.

4. *Is it Pure?* Clean thoughts and clean words. We must shun profanity and coarse jokes.

5. *Is it Lovely?* Love must be the force that drives the way we relate to others.

6. *Is it a Good Report?* What we think about must speak well of our God and our faith.

In the end, our thoughts and actions must be virtuous and excellent. That means we must endeavour, by God’s grace, to live above and beyond reproach. It’s not easy living this life. We will fall short many times, but we should not lower God’s standards to our level.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, help me to focus my thoughts and actions on the positive principles of your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*DELIGHTFUL ATTITUDE*

*Scripture Reading:* Psalm 37

> _Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart._ *Psalms 37:4*

Whilst waiting for the full realisation of what we have believed God for, we are encouraged to maintain an attitude of gratitude and joy by delighting ourselves in the Lord. That simply means getting excited about the things of God. It means praising, worshipping and glorifying the Lord even if the answers to our requests are delayed.

All of us get tempted to worship and praise God only when things are going well with us. Unfortunately, when things begin to go awry and we face problems, we get so obsessed with them and yield to despondency. The joy of the Lord dries up. The smile wears off our faces. Instead of living in expectancy of a miracle, we allow the spirit of depression to dominate our moods.

God requires that we delight ourselves in Him as part of the process for getting the desires of our hearts fulfilled.

• Practice Praise. When you are tempted to yield to self-pity, just open your mouth and speak words of thanks and gratitude to God. Your feelings may be down but allow praise to well up in your heart.

• Participate in the joy of others. When you hear that someone else has received a miracle or been blessed by God, share in their joy and be genuinely happy for them. Don’t be envious or resentful that another has been blessed and not you. As you celebrate with others, God will grant you your own desires.

• Promote God’s work. Occupy your time of waiting with service in the house of God. Let His work be your delight and He will make your delight His work.

When through God’s grace, we delight ourselves in Him, He takes our burdens as His and exchanges them with the longings of our hearts.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, thank you for meeting my needs. I delight myself in you and in all that you’re doing in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen._
