3. The Poor/Third Tithe (Deuteronomy 14:28-29, Deuteronomy 26:12-15):
This was the third tithe, and it was collected specifically every third and sixth year of the seven-year cycle (replacing the festival tithe in those years). So, in the third year, the second tithe (Festival tithe), would not be given, this third would replace it. Its purpose was social welfare.
It was to be stored "within your gates" (in the local towns) and distributed directly to the Levites (who had no land), foreigners, orphans, and widows within their communities, so they "may come and eat and be satisfied."

From the discussion so far, each tithe was unique in their own way. You couldn't give one and leave the other. And you could not give one in place of the other. For instance, you could not say that since I have given the Levitical Tithes, I will not be giving the Poor or Festival Tithes.
You now see that giving tithes to the pastorate is not wrong? Those of us who were more interested in eating our tithes and giving them to the poor, are we going to do that now? Because that would be after we have given the Levitical Tithes.

So, after your first 10% to the pastorate, then you observe the 10% for the Festival aspect, and then the final 10% for the Poor Tithes. Is it fair to say that we were stingy and selfish to attack the Levitical Tithes without much knowledge about it? I mean, even the 10%, we find it difficult to pay, and yet, we talked about feeding the poor and eating our tithes. To do that, we are talking about at least 20% tithing. Let's try to learn about the things we don't understand instead of attacking them.

WHY SHOULD WE TITHE?
Malachi 3:10-12, the only thing God expects us to test Him with, blessings that you won't have enough room to store, nothing will attack your job and all nations will call you blessed.

If I were you, I would definitely try that.

2. The Festival/Second Tithe (Deuteronomy 14:22-27):
This is the second tithe primarily described in Deuteronomy. It was also a tenth of one's produce, but its purpose was different. It was to be used by the tithe-giver and their household (including Levites) to celebrate and "eat before the Lord" at the central place of worship (initially Shiloh, later Jerusalem) during the annual feasts (Passover, Pentecost, Tabernacles).

In other words, this tithe was purposely in reverence to God during the festivals.
Unlike the Levitical tithe which was brought to the priests, this tithe was brought to the central sanctuary to be consumed by the worshipper themselves and their household in celebration.

If the journey was too long, they could sell the produce, take the money to the central place, and then buy food and drink there to consume. It was also done annually, just that it was consumed by the tither and not given to anybody.

A quick one. What did you learn from your research yesterday? I would love to hear about it.

Having been privy to the fact that there were different kinds of tithes, let's have a look at what each tithe meant, when it was supposed to be given, and to whom it was supposed to be given. Which of the three are we supposed to give? All three?

1. The Levitical/First Tithe (Numbers 18:21-24, Leviticus 27:30-33):
This was the primary tithe, a mandatory tenth of all agricultural produce (grain, wine, oil) and livestock. This tithe was the basic tithe, and it was solely for God. God expected the Israelites to give Him this tithe, and since He was the inheritance of the Levites, it was to be given to them. Though it was presented to the Levites, it was God's share in the produce of the Israelites. Its purpose was to support the Levites, who had no land inheritance of their own because their inheritance was the LORD Himself and their service in the Tabernacle/Temple.

WHO TOOK IT? This tithe was brought to the Levites. In turn, the Levites were commanded to give a "tithe of the tithe" (a tenth of what they received) to the priests (Numbers 18:26-28). This "tithe of the tithe" for the priests was brought into the "storehouse" at the temple, as seen in Malachi 3:10. The storehouse was a literal place within the temple complex where provisions for the priests and temple service were kept.
This tithe was given annually.

UNDERSTANDING THE COMPLEXITIES OF TITHING

Now that we know what tithe is, to whom do we pay it?
To understand to whom tithe is paid, we need to understand everything about tithes and which type of tithes we are talking about.
We need to understand the fact that, in ancient Israel, they observed THREE types of tithes, and each of these tithes has a destination or recipient.

So, what kinds of tithes are we talking about?
1. The Levitical Tithes* (Numbers 18:21-24, Leviticus 27:30-33).
2. The Festival Tithes (Deuteronomy 14:22-27).
3. The Poor Tithes (Deuteronomy 14:28-29, Deuteronomy 26:12-15.)
These are the basic Tithes prescribed in the Bible, and all these were observed by Israel.

Do me a favour and do some research on these types of tithes. Don't take my word for it. Verify the scripture references before we dive deeper into what each type means tomorrow, God willing.

SINKING

A cold dread clamped around OP’s heart. He had told his father he was alone. A lie. Now, Jane was trapped inside, a secret ticking time bomb. His father’s arrival was an impending disaster. Between the jarring ring of the phone and the scrape of his father’s key in the lock, time twisted and sped, a blur of panicked whispers and hushed movements. There was no time for strategy, no space for rational thought. Only instinct. OP’s room. It seemed the only option, a flimsy shield against imminent discovery. At first, a frantic, shared mission propelled them.

They were two conspirators, desperately trying to avoid the shame of being caught. It felt…almost normal. A desperate, adrenaline-fueled normal.
Then, the floorboards creaked. His father had entered. Not heading straight to his room as usual, but settling in front of the television, the roar of the football match filling the house. A wave of icy fear washed over OP. Usually, he would be right there with him, cheering on their team. Now, the very thought of leaving the room felt like walking into a firing squad. Trapped. He was trapped. Jane was trapped. In fact, TRAPPED was the word of the day.

The shared goal of avoiding disgrace began to morph into something else, something heavier, more suffocating. The original reason for their being together faded into insignificance, replaced by a single, consuming thought: escape.
Seconds stretched into agonizing minutes, minutes bled into what felt like an eternity. The air in the room thickened, heavy with unspoken tension. OP felt the heat rising in his own skin, a dangerous awareness of Jane’s presence.

He knew the treacherous path his thoughts were threatening to take, the forbidden territory his gaze longed to explore.

Amina dropped the call immediately she voiced out her threats, a gesture to strengthen her threats. OP remained speechless for minutes. But what was he supposed to do? When you live with an angel as a father who scrutinizes, criticizes, and judges every single action he sees, this is exactly what happens. That fateful day, it was not as if he was doing something evil. Opoku invited Janet, the youth leader, to walk him through the expectations of the youth quiz. This youth quiz is organized yearly, and his father wants him to participate this time. His father, Pastor Addo, established the church years ago.

The church has seen significant improvement and growth both in numbers and popularity in the last ten years, and pastor Addo would do anything to keep it that way. He has been famous for his intolerance for misconduct and sin in the church. He publicly criticizes everyone who does anything that he thinks is wrong. And if you mistakenly commit an open sin, your name will be on a speaker’s plan for the month. Everyone preaching will have to use you as an example to teach for the whole month. This made him popular among some of the older congregants, but he was too righteous to many. Pastor Addo was a real thorn in the flesh of the erring.

OP had called Janet in the afternoon. But he engaged her in other things till 7 pm that evening. Then his father called. Until this day, he still can't figure out why his father called. He just asked him if he was alone in the house. At 7 pm in the evening, what on earth could he say to convince his father that he had a lady in the house and that he meant no evil? And his father could read him like a book, should he hesitate. So, he said he was alone. He hadn't even dropped the call when he heard the horn of his father's car. He's back.

SINKING

A chill wind howled outside, rattling the windowpane. Opoku, also known as OP, sat hunched over his desk, his gaze fixed on the flickering computer screen. A sudden gust of wind sent a shiver down his spine, jolting him from his reverie. His mind drifted back to a sunlit afternoon, a time of carefree youth.
A cold sweat broke out on his forehead as he relived the moment. The weight of his past mistakes pressed down on him, a heavy burden he could no longer ignore.

He could still see himself, a wide-eyed teenager, standing at the crossroads of a difficult decision. A simple lie, a momentary lapse in judgment, had set in motion a chain of events that would forever alter his life. The memory, once a distant echo, now resonated with a painful clarity.
He was a prisoner of his own creation, trapped in a labyrinth of deceit. The once bright-eyed boy had been consumed by darkness, a victim of his own making.

Just as he was about to succumb to despair, his phone rang. It was Amina, a colleague with a sharp mind and a calculating gaze. "OP, I know about your little secret," she purred, her voice laced with menace. "And I know how to keep it quiet."

Please, let's let the only voice we have be our thumbs tomorrow, God willing. None of these flag bearers is your relative, and I don't know why you will want to die or sell your sanity for a political course.
JUST VOTE AND LEAVE

I'm expecting the 71%(the Christian population) of Ghanaians to know that nothing can come to pass without God saying so. So, whatever the outcome, let's give God the glory and stop making unnecessary comments. By making those comments, are we saying that God made a mistake by giving us that results?

After praying for peace, if you go making provoking comments, don’t expect God to still give you peace. Prayer without efforts is just NOISE!

Did we even have to pray for peace in a country like Ghana? 71% Christians, 17% Muslims. Muslims pride themselves of being a religion of peace. As for Christians, we don't even have a choice. Yet, here we are, scared to death. You see how we are deceiving ourselves? It's the same people who profess religion who are making some dangerous comments that are threatening our peace. We are sacrificing our sanity on the altar of politics. PITY!

Funny enough, our allegiance is to the party, and our voting doesn't really base on what they do or can do. Knowing that, even the leaders go around making insulting and dangerous comments, because they know that we will still vote for them no matter what they do or say. Very few people vote based on reason. These are those who determine who wins elections in Ghana. They vote for party A this year. If they are not satisfied with their governance, they vote for party B next election year. As for the rest of us, we will still vote for a particular party even if they bring a goat as a flag bearer.

I wonder how many of us are really Christians or Muslims in Ghana.
