NATIONAL GMSA PRESIDENT TO ADDRESS THE MEDIA TODAY!

The Ghana Muslim Students’ Association (GMSA) invites members and the general public to join the National President, H.E. Zakaria Yaakub, as he speaks on the pressing concerns surrounding the religious rights and welfare of Muslim students in mission schools.

The President will further clarify GMSA’s position following recent public press statements on religious practices in mission schools and the concerns raised by affected Muslim students.

Our position remains clear: this is not about Christianity versus Islam, nor an attempt to Islamise Ghana’s schools. It is about religious freedom, equal treatment, dignity and the enforcement of existing policies and constitutional protections.

GMSA continues to advocate for the implementation of the GES 2015 Directive on Religious Tolerance and the Memorandum of Understanding facilitated by the National Peace Council and developed by COMEU, while calling for dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.

📄 GMSA will also be releasing its renewed press statement today, outlining the concerns, our constitutional and policy basis, and our call to the National Chief Imam, Muslim leaders, Parliament, GES, the Ministry of Education, the National Peace Council, the Presidency and all relevant stakeholders to support a lasting solution.

This is a matter that concerns every Ghanaian who believes in religious freedom, fairness and peaceful coexistence.

PRESS STATEMENT | RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

The National Ghana Muslim Students Association (GMSA) has formally joined the call for urgent action on concerns affecting Muslim students in some mission schools, including religious coercion of muslim students, to observe prayers.

Grounded in Ghana’s Constitution, GMSA calls for dialogue, equal treatment, religious freedom, and the protection of every student’s dignity.

34TH NATIONAL GMSA ADMINISTRATION — THIRD & FINAL CENTRAL COMMITTEE SITTING

The third and final sitting of the 34th National GMSA Administration Central Committee was held on Sunday, 22nd August 2026, bringing the programme to a successful close.

Before the official sitting commenced, members engaged in an informal feedback session, sharing their experiences, observations, concerns, and recommendations for improving future programmes and strengthening the Association.

The sitting officially opened with the President welcoming members and expressing appreciation for their patience, commitment, time, and continued efforts towards the success of the administration.

The major agenda was the presentation and adoption of the official Communiqué of the Central Committee Meeting. The five-page communiqué, prepared collaboratively by the National General Secretary, Greater Accra Regional President, Bono Regional Women’s Commissioner, and an Institutional Executive, captured key discussions, decisions, concerns, and resolutions from the first sitting through the final day. The President presented the communiqué to the House, after which members considered and officially adopted it.

Following the addressing of outstanding concerns, a motion was moved for the final adjournment of the first Central Committee Meeting of the 34th Administration. The President assured members of the administration’s commitment to implementing agreed decisions and working towards achieving the outlined objectives.

The meeting concluded with a closing prayer, after which members departed for their respective destinations.

34TH NATIONAL GMSA ADMINISTRATION — SECOND CENTRAL COMMITTEE SITTING

The second sitting of the 34th National GMSA Administration Central Committee was held on Saturday, 21st August 2026, as a comprehensive day of deliberations, strategic planning, and decision-making.

The sitting opened with a prayer led by Imam Saeed, followed by the General Secretary’s review of the minutes and matters arising. The opening ceremony then featured Sheikh Dr. Amin Bonsu, accompanied by Dr. Otchere, Administrator of Amen Professional College of Health Sciences. Sheikh Bonsu shared insights on religious tolerance, Muslim institution-building, education, healthcare, and the need for Muslims to intentionally own and develop institutions.

The House proceeded with the swearing-in of appointees, followed by the President’s State of GMSA Address and presentation of the 34th Administration Blueprint, serving as the strategic guide for the two-year tenure.

Standing Committees were subsequently formed, including Dawah, Judicial, Finance, Welfare, Corporate Affairs, and Agenda 2036 (Ten-Year Development Plan) Committees.

Two Ad-Hoc Committees—the Human Rights Committee and Sustainable Funding Committee—were also established. Following the prayer break, both committees presented their assignments, with the Human Rights Committee addressing issues affecting Muslim students, including the hijab matter and other cases involving infringements of students’ rights.

The House further considered Any Other Business (AOB) before the sitting was adjourned to the following day. The session concluded with a closing prayer led by Chief Imam Imam Mohammed Salis.
