A Faithful Missionary Returns to the Father

On Thursday, 9th July 2026, the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), Ghana–Liberia Province, together with the family, friends, religious, clergy, and faithful, gathered to bid a final farewell to our beloved confrere, Fr. John Straathof, SVD.

The Funeral Mass was solemnly celebrated at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Dansoman, in thanksgiving for his life of dedicated missionary service, steadfast faith, and unwavering commitment to the proclamation of the Gospel. Following the Eucharistic celebration, his mortal remains were laid to rest at the SVD Cemetery in Nsawam.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined us in prayer, attended the funeral rites, and supported the family and the Society during this time of mourning. Your presence and prayers were a great source of comfort and hope.

As we commend Fr. John to the loving mercy of God, we give thanks for the remarkable witness of his missionary vocation and the countless lives he touched through his ministry.

“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Master.” (Matthew 25:23)

May the Lord grant Fr. John Straathof, SVD, eternal rest, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
