Sunday 13th August

12/08/2023

From Rev Steve : This Sunday see the celebration of Lammastide at St Leonards, Farlington – here is some background. Lammas origins lie in the Christian liturgical calendar, its name deriving from the Anglo- Saxon half-mas meaning loaf-mass. It marked a time when the agricultural year and the Christian calendar came together. From Medieval times it marked the end of the hay harvest and the beginning of the grain.
And did you know Lammas even features in William Shakespeare's most famous plays. It tells the story of Romeo and Juliet.
In Act I, Scene III of Romeo and Juliet, the Nurse asks Lady Capulet how many days there are until Lammas-tide. Lammas Day is a holiday observed by many European countries on the first of August. Lammas is an agricultural holiday, recognized by Pagans and Christians alike as a celebration of the first harvest. It is customary to bring a loaf of bread to a nearby church to be blessed. "Lammas-tide" is a term that refers to the season of Lammas - so when the Nurse asks how many days there are until Lammas-tide, she is wondering how many days there are until August 1st. This is relevant in Romeo and Juliet because Juliet's fourteenth birthday is on Lammas Eve, or July 31st. Juliet is one of Shakespeare's few characters whose age and date of birth are both known.
Blessings
Steve.

From Rev Steve: In my later to the various village magazines or newsletters I talk about the importance of taking a break, so following my own advice I am doing just that. This update is out on a Thursday instead of Friday for the coming Sunday as I am on leave from Saturday and back in time to be at Farlington on the 23rd of July. We cannot underestimate the need for rest and recuperation; without it we can make ourselves ill or even burnout – none of wants that. Canon Robert is holding the fort for phone and emails, and we also have our Lay Ministers Margaret and Harold, so we are not without cover. The same will apply in September when Sue and I have our main two-week break.
Whatever and however you take some time out over the summer, be blessed.
Stay safe, stay well, Blessings
Steve.

From Rev Steve: On Tuesday of this week, it was World Refugee Day, this is where Bishop Eleanor focuses in her video reflection. One of my concerns over the situation with refugees is that we can become unsympathetic to the plight of those desperate individuals who are fleeing in the hope of a better life, and that we begin to suffer from compassion fatigue and switch off to plight of these desperate people. If we turn to Scripture, there are hundreds of references related to welcoming and caring for the stranger. Here are just three of them: Matthew 25:35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, Hebrews 13:2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Leviticus 19:33-34 When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
A Prayer for Refugees
Almighty and merciful God, whose Son became a refugee and had no place to call his own;
look with mercy on those who today are fleeing from danger, homeless and hungry.
Bless those who work to bring them relief; inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts;
and guide the nations of the world towards that day when all will rejoice in your Kingdom of justice and of peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Stay safe, stay well,
Blessings
Steve.
