Patrick was born in Britain of a Romanized family. When he was 16 years old, Irish raiders captured him and carried him into slavery in Ireland where he spent six bleak years as a herdsman, strengthened only by his Christian faith. He had a dream that the ship in which he was to escape was ready, whereupon he fled from his slavery and found passage to Britain.
After he had been in Britain for a while, he had a dream in which a letter was delivered to him headed “The Voice of the Irish.” As Patrick read it, he seemed to hear a certain company of Irish beseeching him to walk once more among them. Although reluctant to do so because of his doubts of fitness for the task, he set forth for Ireland. Once there his hesitations vanished. Utterly confident in his Christian faith, he journeyed far and wide, baptizing and confirming with untiring zeal.
Probably the most popular legend about Patrick is that of the shamrock, which has him explain the concept of the Holy Trinity, three persons in one God, to an unbeliever by showing the example of the three-leaved plant with one stalk. Traditionally, the Irish have worn shamrocks, the national flower of Ireland, in their lapels on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, the supposed date of his death.

Today we celebrate the festival of St Chad, the saint and bishop to whom Lichfield Cathedral is dedicated.
Born to a noble family around 634, he was educated on Lindisfarne and spent time as Bishop of York and Abbot of Lastingham. When he was appointed Bishop of Mercia, one of the most powerful Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, Chad chose to centre his administration in Lichfield where he founded a church and a community which became the religious heart of the kingdom.
He died on 2 March 672.

Today is St David’s Day. St. David was a 6th-century bishop who is revered as the patron saint of Wales. His mother was St Non.
Many miracles are ascribed to St. David, including the resurrection of a dead child and the restoration of sight to a blind man. One of the more famous miracles associated with him is the formation of a hill beneath him as he preached to a large crowd at Llandewi Brefi, allowing them to see and hear him more clearly. During this incident, a white dove is said to have landed on his shoulder, and St. David is often so depicted.

A date for your diary: MONDAY 5th FEBRUARY at 7pm!

As you are aware, our Vicar Revd Preb John Allan will be retiring at the end of September. At the same time our church warden, secretary and treasurer will also be stepping down from the PCC, after many years of faithful service. It is the PCC that runs the church and ensures that it is open for services and we therefore need people to come forward to fill the roles that will become vacant. If there is no PCC then the whole future of St. Leonard’s is in question.
Therefore we are holding a meeting on Monday 5th February at 7.00pm in St. Leonard’s Church, to which everyone is welcome, so that we can discuss and explain the situation and at which everyone will be free to express their views on how we should proceed. We very much need people to step up and help us to find a positive way forward to ensure that our much-loved church remains available to future generations.
Please do attend the meeting if you are able, and bring with you your ideas and suggestions for the future.
