Matthew 28:16 – 20
The Commissioning of the Disciples
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’[a]
The Trinity offers us a living relationship of worship and doubt. When the disciples went up the mountain some saw him in his resurrection glory with all authority in heaven and on earth. Just like the coming Messiah foretold in Daniel 7:13 – 14.
Others saw his wounds, remembered the curses and humiliation of the cross and their own inability to stay with him. Fear and doubt took hold and they fled.
Lord Jesus, stay with us when we doubt, or fear the future; restore our faith in your love and our place in your plans for your Kingdom of humiliation and promise.
The Trinity is the framework of our mission and evangelism, then and now. We are an inclusive church, making disciples of all nations. We publicly baptise and sign in the name of the creative and sustaining Father of Jesus; in the humility of the suffering, obedient love of Jesus himself; in the transcendent power of the Holy Spirit leading us into the citizenship of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Holy Spirit of God we praise you as we see unfolding before us encounters of art and faith and hospitality in Worcester city centre. We thank you that we are readied for such progress in the Gospel, seeking equality, peace and progress through Spirit filled conversations. We seek deeper faith and continuing hope. We pray for the wider “National Conversation” in the UK and the international pilgrimages of our Muslim friends at this time of Eid.
The Trinity offers us the promise of the presence of Jesus alive in each disciple to the end of time.
God our Father, we praise you for yours is a loving relationship to be experienced, not simply a knotty problem to be understood. We pray for the bereaved that they may experience a relationship with you that is eternal and never fades away. We pray for those exploring the adventure of older age that they may live the teaching and example of your Son to be one with Him in heart, mind and spirit, to the end of the age.
Amen.
