Davenham WI members enjoyed a very engaging meeting on Wednesday 8th April, when we welcomed Carolyn Shaw, Education Officer at RSPCA Stapley Grange.
Founded in 1824, the RSPCA has a long and proud history of protecting animals, but as Carolyn explained, their work today still relies heavily on public support. With only around 320 frontline officers covering England and Wales, the organisation depends on the public to report concerns and assist in safeguarding animal welfare. They receive an astonishing 2,487 calls a day, and it costs over £1 million a year to keep their vital services running.
Carolyn gave a fascinating and informative talk about the work carried out at Stapley Grange Wildlife Centre, which has its own wildlife hospital and dedicated team of vets. Members learned about the wide range of animals cared for there, from injured birds and small mammals to more unusual wildlife including seals, all rehabilitated with the aim of being released back into their natural habitats. Her passion for animal welfare really shone through, and it was inspiring to hear about the dedication of the staff and volunteers.
The talk also highlighted how members of the public can support the work of the RSPCA, whether through volunteering, donations, or simply being more aware of local wildlife and how to help protect it. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and a reminder of the important role we can all play in caring for animals in our community.
