ST THOMAS MORE SCHOOL, WEST GRINSTEAD

Overseen by the Southwark Catholic Children's Society, St Thomas More School was a junior Approved School and later a Community Home, but to us it is remembered fondly as Tommy Mores. The school was run by the Presentation Brothers from 1934 until 1977 when responsibility was handed over to Mr Tony Glynn and his team until its closure in the early eighties. A

fter an unsuccessful business venture to utilise the buildings as the Yago School, it was demolished in the early nineties. Our forum started in 2002 on the now defunct Friends Reunited, and since early 2009 it has also established itself on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/37869561698/), Twitter and Careleavers Reunited. We have held reunions annually in West Grinstead and neighbouring Partridge Green since 2010 and have contributed personal recollections and photographs to the late Herbie Whtmore's local history group book “When the School Bell Rang”. We believe this school forum is one of the best of its kind as it was formed with a wealth of the best available photographs and historical information as well as its greatest asset, the members who regularly share stories, information and photographs. This is a forum where former pupils and staff alike can renew friendships and establish links with their past. This is the original St Thomas More School forum and we think it’s the best – So, welcome! Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/37869561698/

HERBIE WHITMORE – R.I.P

Today, the life of Herbie Whitmore was celebrated in his local parish church.

To the parish of West Grinstead he was a pillar of the community as well as a local historian; to us, he was a friend who, despite his seven-year battle with terminal illness, never lost the capacity to be dedicated, witty and, above all, very kind.

We have checked our eMails and am able to confirm that, to all intents and purposes, Herbie had been a member of our STM group since 09:34 on Tuesday, May 11th 2010. In that time he contributed a substantial amount of rarely-seen photographs and documents and was instrumental in telling our story in three chapters of his local history society’s book ‘When the School Bell Rang’.

The next chapters of our history and future are up to us.

God bless and thank you so much, Herbie.

STM – AERIEL VIEW

Definitely recommend that you have a look at this aerial view of STM as I have an idea it’s the best aerial photo of STM and West Grinstead in existence!

HELP WANTED

As I feel it’s important that people are able to find our Facebook and Twitter sites easily, I’m looking for someone (who knows all about Google etc.) who can devote some unpaid time in order to help in ensuring that our STM group forum (as well as our STM page) remain prominent in searches so that any former boys or staff members of STM are able to find a link to their past.

Because I know for sure that I/we have sourced the best photographic and documented material around, I feel all of us would just hate it if the best was passing these ex STM’ers by.

So, if you are an internet whizz or you know of someone who is then please do not hesitate to contact me.
