📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀:
This course examines the rise, expansion and decline of the Umayyad dynasty, the first dynasty in Islam. It explores the transition to hereditary kingship under Muʿāwiyah, the succession of Yazīd, and the turbulent events that shaped the early Umayyad period.

The course traces the expansion of Umayyad rule from the Atlantic to Sind, examining the growth of the Islamic empire across its western and eastern territories. It also considers the leadership of ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and his efforts to renew governance in accordance with the Sunnah.

Finally, the course investigates the political and social tensions that weakened Umayyad rule, including the treatment of non-Arabs, growing discontent and the revolution in the East.

Ustadh Abu Ayyub is an expert historian, author and educator, and consultant on Islamic history based in Istanbul.

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀:
This course examines some of the most controversial, misunderstood and frequently challenged hadith in Islam. Rather than simply presenting apologetic responses, it explores how classical Muslim scholars approached reports that appeared difficult or contradictory, drawing on the intellectual tradition of Mushkil al-Ḥadīth and Mukhtalif al-Ḥadīth. Students will engage with the approaches of scholars such as Ibn Qutaybah, al-Ṭaḥāwī, Ibn Fūrak, al-Nawawī and Ibn Ḥajar, examining the principles and interpretative methods they employed.

The course addresses a broad range of subjects, including hadith concerning women, marriage, gender roles, apostasy, warfare, slavery, medicine, science, cosmology and the unseen. It also considers reports that appear to conflict with the Qur’ān or other authentic narrations, the significance of historical and cultural context, and the effects of translation, variant narrations and figurative language on interpretation.

Students will explore the relationship between knowledge, intention, and righteous action, alongside the disciplines of daily worship and avoidance of sin.

The course examines outward and inward dimensions of disobedience, including sins of the limbs, tongue, and heart, with particular attention to sincerity, envy, ostentation, humility, and taqwā. It also considers al-Ghazālī’s treatment of etiquette and conduct towards Allāh, teachers, parents, family, friends, and wider society.

By engaging with these themes, students will develop a deeper understanding of al-Ghazālī’s framework for tazkiyat al-nafs and the cultivation of disciplined worship and noble character.

We were honoured to be joined by Shaykh Sharif Khalid, Sidi AbdulMalik Sinet, Sidi Ayoub Iklil and Sidi Noamaan Qadri.

Our hearts were filled with love, remembrance and gratitude as we came together to honour the Beloved Messenger of Allah ﷺ and reflect upon his noble life, character and blessed Sunnah.
