South Oxhey Baptist Church is 70 years old! Seventy years of the building, but more importantly 70 years of God’s faithfulness to those that have found community in this place.
Our bench plaque reminds us of the difficult times, particularly in the last couple of years when we lost friends and family to Covid, but also speaks of the certain hope that Jesus brings to those who are weary or struggling, offering rest and unexpected peace.
Olive trees, like the one we planted were first mentioned in the Bible when Noah released a dove and it brought back an olive branch. Since then, the olive tree has had many uses, including as food, medicine, furniture, and as oil for lamps and anointing; and olive trees were also referred to by Jesus and the apostles in their teaching. This tree symbolises peace, sustenance, rest, light, healing, new beginnings and new life. We pray that, as we partner with God, he will bless our local community with all these good things, for the next 70 years and more, or until Jesus himself returns in glory.
Psalm 52: 8-9 says:
But I am like an olive tree
flourishing in the house of God;
I trust in God’s unfailing love
for ever and ever.
For what you have done I will always praise you
in the presence of your faithful people.
And I will hope in your name,
for your name is good.
Amen
